CAD Designer - ASME

Worthington EnterprisesWorthington, OH

About The Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented CAD Designer / Drafter to support the ASME Outside Sourced Production (OSP) business by creating and maintaining accurate manufacturing drawings, models, bills of material, and controlled engineering documentation for pressure vessels and related products. This role reports to the Program Manager and works closely with the ASME Design Engineer, Project Manager, Quality, Sourcing, Operations, and external manufacturing partners. The CAD Designer will translate approved engineering requirements, customer specifications, and design inputs into clear, manufacturable SolidWorks models and drawings for carbon- and stainless-steel pressure vessels. The role will also support drawing release, revision control, supplier technical questions, PPAP and First Article Inspection documentation, and standardized drawing practices that enable the OSP model to scale efficiently. The ideal candidate is highly accurate, organized, and experienced in mechanical drafting for fabricated products. Success in this role requires strong SolidWorks capability, practical knowledge of manufacturing drawings and GD&T, disciplined configuration control, and the ability to work effectively with engineers, quality teams, and outside fabricators.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, weldments, and production drawings is required.
  • Strong mechanical drafting skills and ability to create clear, complete, and manufacturable engineering drawings.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing practices; familiarity with ASME Y14.5 preferred.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, customer specifications, sketches, redlines, and technical requirements and accurately translate them into controlled drawings.
  • Understanding of welded fabrication, sheet-metal and plate construction, formed heads, nozzles, flanges, machining, and pressure-vessel manufacturing processes preferred.
  • Working knowledge of bills of material, part numbering, revision control, engineering change processes, and PDM/PLM document management.
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VIII pressure-vessel drawing requirements preferred; exposure to applicable Sections II, V, and IX is a plus.
  • Knowledge of pressure-vessel fabrication, materials, welding, NDE, pressure testing, and pipe/fitting geometry; familiarity with ASME B16.5 (flanges), B16.9 (buttweld fittings), and B1.20.1 (NPT threads) preferred.
  • Familiarity with PPAP, First Article Inspection, ballooned drawings, critical characteristics, and inspection-plan creation preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify dimensional conflicts, missing requirements, drawing inconsistencies, and documentation gaps before release.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, quality personnel, project management, sourcing, operations, and external fabricators.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and willingness to support supplier RFIs, drawing clarifications, deviations, and production issues within defined engineering authority.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and digital engineering tools; experience with ERP, PDM/PLM, or document-control systems preferred.
  • Digital fluency, including responsible use of generative AI and automation tools to improve documentation, standard work, drawing checks, and workflow efficiency while maintaining technical verification.
  • 2-4 years of mechanical drafting, CAD design, or engineering-design support experience using SolidWorks in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience creating production drawings, assemblies, weldments, and bills of material for fabricated industrial equipment.
  • Experience with pressure vessels, tanks, welded fabrication, process equipment, or similar engineered products preferred.
  • Experience supporting engineers, manufacturing teams, suppliers, fabricators, or contract manufacturers through drawing release and production is preferred.
  • Experience supporting PPAP, First Article Inspection, ballooned drawings, inspection plans, or quality documentation is preferred.
  • Experience managing engineering changes, drawing revisions, controlled documents, and as-built updates preferred.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM, ERP, quality, or engineering document-control systems preferred; exposure to ASME or other compliance-driven manufacturing environments is a plus.
