About The Position

We are hiring up to two (2) full time, permanent Cableman positions working out of Edmonton, Alberta. We are looking to add up to two experienced and dedicated team members to the Underground Trades team in EPCOR’s Electricity Operations. As a Cableman in this area, you will be accountable for coaching, leading and working with trades and non-trades personnel engaged in constructing, maintaining and repairing Distribution & Transmission power lines and electrical equipment up to and including 500 kV.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent level of secondary education.
  • Powerline Technician (PLT) Journeyman Certificate.
  • 3+ years of experience at a Journeyman level.
  • Valid Class 3 driver’s license as a minimum; Class one preferred.
  • Must be able to qualify for an EPCOR driver permit. A driver's abstract may be required.
  • Ability to read technical prints and schematics.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety regulations and will be required to obtain a working knowledge of related provincial safety legislation and city bylaws.
  • Knowledge and experience in underground distribution systems and switching is an asset
  • Thorough working knowledge of protective grounding, climbing poles with belt and spurs, aerial bucket/hydraulic equipment, tension stringing devices and electrical safe work practices.
  • Experience operating Trade related equipment is an asset
  • Strong analytical thinking and written and verbal communication combined with planning and organizational skills.
  • Computer skills and proficiency using software such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Exhibits ability to develop and improve processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to coach, lead and empower others and work effectively in a team.
  • Proven attention to detail and technical expertise.
  • Ability to successfully complete EPCOR’s switching school to fulfill role requirements.
  • Ability to handle new or emergency situations in a logical and reasoned manner.
  • Team player who conducts yourself in a safe and professional manner at all times.
  • Detail oriented, have highly developed judgment and possess problem solving skills.
  • Understand that health, safety and environment are integral to EPCOR's work, and strive to maintain a zero injury organizational culture.
  • High level of safety awareness and demonstrate safe work practices at all times.
  • Candidates will be required to actively participate in safety and other job-related training.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Attending and passing EPCOR’s switching school to fulfill role requirements.
  • Switching on energized electrical apparatus and system automation components.
  • Constructing, repairing and maintaining new and existing transmission and Distribution Underground systems.
  • Splicing and terminating XLPE, EPR, PILC cables and any other number of insulating conductors and wiring.
  • Locating faults.
  • Terminating Underground equipment including livefront and deadfront equipment.
  • Testing cables with equipment such as VLF, hipot, and megger.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Inspecting and testing power lines and cables.
  • Training apprentices and supervising non-trades personnel.
  • Responding to emergency conditions and environmental hazards.
  • Adhering to safety practices and procedures.
  • Partaking in rotations within EPCOR to other disciplines and parts of the Trade.
  • Ensuring the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. This includes, timely reporting of all incidents and safety concerns through the Event Reporting System (ERS), providing higher level technical expertise, assisting colleagues to resolve problems, keeping the Foreman and Team leads informed of task progress and work performance, making recommendations for improvement to the work, and working as a team to ensure success.
  • Completing various administrative functions such as report writing, as built information, Ivara comments and timesheets.
