About The Position

The Terminator B / Cable Splicer Underground is a skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working safely on energized and de-energized underground systems, leading crews in the absence of a Foreman, and conducting pre-job briefings. The position requires a comprehensive understanding of underground distribution, including frequent work with energized high voltage systems, operating a backhoe, and identifying primary and secondary voltages. Key responsibilities include splicing cables, understanding induced voltage, using tools for cable termination, and adhering to grounding procedures. The role also demands knowledge of underground services, infrastructure, duct banks, switching procedures, and phasing out lines. Planning safe work based on job prints or work orders and promoting safety are paramount. The Cable Splicer is also responsible for inspecting rubber goods, PPE, and the work of crew members.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience.
  • Read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Able to travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Understands flag and tag procedures.
  • Able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • Demonstrates safe driving techniques.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work outside, frequently in inclement weather.
  • Willing to work over-time when requested.
  • Able to use hand tools on a continuous basis.
  • Capable of being exposed to dirt and power on a daily basis.
  • Possesses knowledge of tools for terminating cable.
  • Must be able to follow Company safety rules and all other Company policies.

Nice To Haves

  • A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground work.

  • Understands how to obtain a one shot on a recloser.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces.
  • Understands confined space requirements.
  • Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover up.
  • Understands underground services, infrastructure and duct banks.
  • Possesses knowledge of underground switching procedures.
  • Understands how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
  • Capable of planning safe work based on a job print or work order.
  • Promote safety at all times.
  • Able to properly inspect rubber goods and PPE.
  • Inspects the work of crew members.
  • Performs all other related work as required to complete the job.
  • Knowledge in identifying underground utility locates.
  • Capable of terminating different sizes of cable.
  • Knowledge in troubleshooting underground circuits.
  • Able to identify unforeseen obstacles that would hinder safety or production.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations, when required.
