About The Position

The Cable Locator will assist internal and external customers to protect GPC underground facilities from damage by excavators while they are digging around these facilities. Cable locator will insure Georgia Power is compliant with the Georgia Utility Facility Protection Act (GUFPA). This position will be responsible for receiving tickets from the UPC system from which they will prioritize and plan the driving route that best meets the demands by location and meeting a standard response time of 48 hours. This position will use locator equipment at the job site which weighs between 5-10 lbs and must walk on uneven terrain. Incumbent must work under minimal supervision and maintain daily work records. Duties include, but are not limited to: reading circuit and street maps to chart routes, communicating necessary information to other parties, assist underground crews as requested, enter manholes as needed, complete ticket requests and ensure closure through UPC system. Normal work hours are scheduled between 7:00am and 6:00pm, Mon-Fri. Incumbent must be available to work a given shift during these hours, plus occasional weekends and holidays as business needs dictate. This includes being "on call" by phone and radio and available for STORM duty. Incumbent must work in outside, adverse weather conditions and be able to drive throughout the metro Atlanta area.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Suitable experience in one or any combination of the following areas: Cable Locating, Underground Power Utility Distribution Construction/ Maintenance, Electrical Network Underground Construction/ Maintenance desired.
  • Working knowledge of underground distribution techniques is preferred.
  • Technical aptitude to work with UD locating equipment and GPC system.
  • Knowledge of underground distribution construction techniques is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret circuit maps and street maps required.
  • Prior experience and knowledge of MS Office products including Outlook, Word and Excel strongly preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication (oral and written) skills to act as a liaison between various parties and critical information needed to perform a job.

  • Must be competent in working with computer to receive and process tickets from the UPC system and communicate through emails.

  • Must be available to work after hours - evenings, weekends and holidays as business needs dictate (this includes being "on call " by phone and radio).
  • Incumbent needs a valid Georgia driver's license to be able to drive a (company provided) vehicle to job sites.
  • Incumbent must currently live within a 50 mile radius of the job location or be willing to move at his/her own expense within the first 6 months of working in this position.
  • This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle.
  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license).
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
