About The Position

CLA is a top 10 national professional services firm focused on creating opportunities for clients, people, and communities through wealth advisory, digital, audit, tax, consulting, and outsourcing services. This role is for a Controller to join CLA's State and Local Government (SLG) Client Consulting and Outsourcing team, providing support to clients across New York State. The position primarily involves on-site client support in Western Upstate New York, with occasional remote work flexibility based on client needs. The SLG outsourcing service assists governmental entities in mitigating risk, overcoming challenges, meeting deadlines, and identifying personnel for workforce needs.

Requirements

  • Six years of relevant accounting and/or financial experience is required
  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Combination of related experience, education, and training may be accepted in lieu of degree
  • This position requires frequent travel to/from client sites and may require occasional non-local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings and/or other business-related purposes

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with state and local government municipalities strongly preferred
  • CPA certification preferred but not required
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP Grants Management Experience preferred
  • Knowledge of MUNIS preferred and/or other commonly used municipal software packages
  • Prior project management and client management experience preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Controller for the designated clients you service
  • Take on the role of consultant and advisor to your clients on best practices for accounting and finance-related engagements
  • Provide project management expertise by managing multiple clients, work, and deadlines
  • Prepare and analyze client financial statements and make recommendations
  • Foster and build opportunities and attend industry-leading events and trainings
  • Maintain knowledge of the client’s organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards
  • Advise management on short-term and long term-financial objectives, policies and actions
