About The Position

The Business Loan Officer plays a key role in originating, assessing, and managing business loan requests while cultivating strong and lasting relationships with commercial clients. This position actively contributes to lead generation, loan sourcing, and maintaining comprehensive knowledge of lending products. Leveraging sales expertise and interpersonal skills, the Loan Officer conducts loan presentations and guides members through financing options. Additionally, the role includes ongoing portfolio management, ensuring the effective servicing and monitoring of existing business loans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance or related field preferred.
  • Certifications earned through CUNA Lending School desired
  • Knowledge of appropriate lending regulations, procedures, and practices, including federal and/or state banking regulations that affect lending practices.
  • Knowledge of government-sponsored loan programs such as SBA.
  • Strong understanding of business financials, credit analysis, and loan structuring.
  • Experience with loan origination systems and financial analysis tools.
  • Minimum of 5 years of financial institution experience, most specifically in small or business lending.
  • Demonstrated ability to sell business deposit and credit products.
  • Experience with digital banking platforms and payment technologies.
  • Commercial Credit Analysis: Proficient in evaluating financial statements, assessing borrower risk, and structuring business loans.
  • Relationship Management: Skilled in building and maintaining strong connections with business members, prospects and community partners.
  • Negotiation and Problem Solving: Capable of negotiating loan terms and resolving complex lending issues with creativity and goal of creating value for the client and the organization.
  • Business Development: Ability to identify new lending opportunities and grow the business portfolio strategically.
  • Risk Management: Capable of identifying and mitigating risk within the business lending portfolio.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for presenting loan recommendations and consulting with business clients and prospects.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensures loan documentation and financial analysis are accurate and complete.

Responsibilities

  • Achieve assigned sales targets and contribute to the growth of the business lending and deposit portfolio through proactive business development initiatives
  • Design and implement a strategic outreach plan, engaging both existing members and prospective clients to expand commercial relationships
  • Interview business members, collect loan applications, and prepare preliminary documentation; provide guidance on loan options, terms, credit criteria, interest rates, and necessary disclosures
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for business financial services, supporting both current and potential members with customized solutions
  • Maintain detailed client records by effectively utilizing the credit union’s CRM platform to document interactions, monitor product engagement, and manage relationship tracking
  • Conduct on-site property and collateral inspections for new loan applications and annual reviews as needed
  • Gather and evaluate financial documentation, including business statements, tax returns, and other relevant data, to support credit analysis
  • Monitor the performance of business loans and support portfolio management efforts to minimize risk and maximize member success
  • Represent the credit union in industry forums, civic organizations, and community events to foster visibility and promote products and services
  • Lead initiatives to develop innovative financial products and services for business members; conduct member research, analyze market trends, and recommend strategic enhancements
  • Manage the full lifecycle of business lending activities, including origination, underwriting, documentation, and closing, in alignment with credit union policies and regulatory standards
  • Stay informed on current lending practices, industry trends, and regulatory requirements; integrate best practices to maintain operational excellence
  • Coordinate with internal departments, including underwriting, compliance, and member services, to facilitate efficient loan processing and superior member experiences
