BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

Frank L Blum Construction Co•Raleigh, NC

About The Position

The Business Intelligence Analyst builds and maintains the reporting, dashboards and automated workflows the company runs on. This role turns data held across the company's operating and financial systems into reporting leadership can act on, and converts manual processes into automated workflows that remove repeated handling. The work is platform agnostic by design. The person in this seat is expected to hold the concepts and the principles, and to apply them on whichever platforms the company is using at the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science, data analytics, business, engineering, construction management or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two or more years of experience building business intelligence reporting in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and publish reporting independently on a major business intelligence platform, including the query and calculation layers.
  • Working proficiency writing queries against a relational database, including joins, aggregation and window functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to design dimensional data models (fact and dimension tables) and to build version-controlled, tested SQL transformations on top of them.
  • Working knowledge of row-level security and data model design on a business intelligence platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to build working automated workflows, including approval routing.
  • Advanced spreadsheet skills, and the ability to gather requirements directly from non-technical stakeholders and translate them into a defined scope.
  • Ability to manage several concurrent requests and communicate status without being asked.
  • Ability to explain technical work to a non-technical audience.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced calculation work, row-level security and data model design on a business intelligence platform.
  • Query performance tuning, indexing and execution plan analysis.
  • Error handling in production automations: structured retry, logging and failure alerting.
  • Experience reporting against or integrating construction, project management or enterprise resource planning systems.
  • Prior experience in construction, engineering, architecture or another project-based industry. Candidates from other industries are encouraged to apply.
  • Working knowledge of construction financial reporting: percentage-of-completion accounting, work-in-progress schedules, over and under billings, backlog and margin fade.
  • Experience with Trimble Spectrum (Data Exchange / App Xchange), the Procore API, the Egnyte API, BuildingConnected or Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps).
  • Experience with analytics engineering tooling (dbt or equivalent) and SQL Server fundamentals: scheduled jobs, backups, access control and query performance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain reporting and dashboards for project teams and corporate departments, from a defined specification agreed before development begins.
  • Maintain the published reporting portfolio, including refresh schedules, access management and retirement of reports no longer in use.
  • Build data models that let business users answer their own follow-up questions without submitting a new request.
  • Apply company brand standards to every published report and client-facing deliverable.
  • Implement row-level security so that each user sees only the regions, projects and measures appropriate to their role.
  • Ensure every published report renders correctly on a phone or tablet for field use.
  • Design, build, test and maintain automated workflows that replace manual data entry and routing across the company.
  • Convert existing form-based and spreadsheet-based intake processes into web-based workflows with proper approval routing, notification and audit history.
  • Document every automation with a process map, a named business owner and a defined failure and escalation path.
  • Monitor deployed workflows, resolve failures and maintain version control as the systems they depend on change.
  • Build automations on the company's low-code workflow platform where it fits and in code where it does not, and record which approach each automation uses and why.
  • Write and maintain queries against the company data warehouse and the systems connected to it.
  • Maintain the data pipelines that feed the reporting environment from the company's operating, financial and document systems.
  • Own the reporting data warehouse end to end: ingestion from the ERP, project management, document and bidding systems; the dimensional data model; refresh schedules; backups; access control; and the documentation of each.
  • Own the master-data crosswalk for project, vendor and cost-code identifiers across the operating systems. Detect and resolve identifier conflicts at the source rather than patching them in a report.
  • Run automated data quality tests on every pipeline and publish a monthly data-quality scorecard to the Director.
  • Run data quality checks, and investigate and resolve discrepancies between a source system and a published report.
  • Maintain documentation of data definitions so that a given measure means the same thing in every report that uses it.
  • Take requests through the departmental intake process, scope them accurately and commit to realistic delivery dates.
  • Escalate competing priorities rather than absorbing them.
  • Train end users on what is delivered to them and produce short reference material, so that adoption does not depend on repeat one-on-one support.
  • Present findings and recommendations to project teams and department leaders in plain language.
  • Measure and report usage of every published report. A report with no use in 90 days is retired or rebuilt, not left running.
  • Work to a development plan agreed with the Director covering data modeling, query performance, automation reliability and construction domain knowledge.
  • Take on progressively larger scope as capability is demonstrated.
  • Stay current on the platforms the company uses and on the direction those platforms are moving.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial, personnel and client information encountered in the course of the work.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
