Business Development Representative

Basis AINew York, NY
$110,000 - $130,000Onsite

About The Position

Basis is seeking to scale its founding Business Development Representative (BDR) team to establish its outbound sales motion from the ground up. The company has historically relied on inbound leads and word-of-mouth referrals. This role is ideal for an early-career individual looking to create a new system, with a clear path toward closing roles or leadership positions as Basis grows. The BDR will partner with the Director of Business Development and the founding Account Executive team to identify target accounts, refine messaging, and develop a repeatable outbound playbook. This is a builder role focused on creating processes and strategies in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment.

Requirements

  • High agency: Ability to identify necessary actions, execute them, and adapt independently when faced with challenges, without relying on a pre-existing playbook.
  • First principles thinker: Approach to problem-solving by questioning underlying assumptions and building solutions from the ground up, tailored to Basis and its customers.
  • Coachable: Willingness to consider and build upon guidance from those with more context.
  • Creative: Ability to find unique angles and craft compelling written communication.
  • Natural leader: Setting standards and establishing a template for future hires in the role.
  • Strong communicator: Clear and concise writing skills, ability to hold conversations, handle pushback, and communicate effectively.
  • All-in attitude: Commitment beyond a standard 9-5 due to the significant growth opportunity.

Nice To Haves

  • 0–2 years in sales, business development, recruiting, or a role with heavy outbound communication.
  • Experience in high-pace environments such as high growth startups, investment banking, private equity, university-level athletics, or door-to-door sales.
  • High levels of adoption of AI in day-to-day activities.
  • Experience with outbound tools like Apollo, Outreach, Salesloft, HubSpot, or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Build the outbound playbook from scratch by testing different channels, messages, and approaches, and then systematizing successful strategies.
  • Develop effective messaging for Basis by researching and testing communication strategies that resonate with in-house accounting and finance teams.
  • Research and prioritize target accounts, defining the targeting logic for outreach.
  • Consistently book meetings with controllers, CFOs, and finance leaders through calibrated outreach efforts.
  • Gather market intelligence, including objections, competitor information, and customer pain points, and feed this information back into the business to shape positioning, sales, and product development.
  • Establish and own the necessary tools, tracking systems, and reporting mechanisms to monitor performance and identify what is working.
