Proskauer is seeking a highly motivated, strategic, and business-oriented individual to support the Firm’s nationally recognized Tax and Compensation & Benefits (C&B) practices. While distinct, these practices frequently partner to advise clients on sophisticated transactions and high-stake matters. The Business Development Manager will serve as a critical business partner, working closely with lawyers across offices to develop, execute, and enhance client development strategies designed to advance these practices’ market position. Proskauer’s Tax practice is known for its practical, business-oriented counsel in a highly technical field. The team serves as trusted advisors on the most complex and challenging matters of the day, delivering creative yet pragmatic solutions to leading companies, investors, and institutions. The Firm’s Compensation & Benefits practice is highly regarded for its comprehensive expertise in employee benefits, executive compensation, fiduciary matters, and ERISA litigation. Our lawyers are at the forefront of legal and business developments, representing Fortune 500 companies, major sports leagues, nonprofit organizations, and multiemployer plans on their most cutting-edge and significant issues, including benefits matters in complex M&A transactions and sophisticated pension investment structures. The Business Development Manager will collaborate closely with practice leadership and partners to drive revenue and strengthen client relationships. This role includes leading pitches and RFPs, enhancing the practices’ market presence through events and thought leadership, and identifying opportunities to grow existing client relationships and generate new business across both practice areas.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of relevant experience required; prior law firm business development experience a plus, especially in Tax or Executive Compensation/Employee Benefits practices.
  • Practical experience in a professional services, marketing or business development function required.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and PowerPoint.
  • This position will require physical presence in Proskauer’s offices on a regular basis (at least 3x per week, or more, if it becomes the policy of the Firm or as business needs require).

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Business Growth Develop and execute business development strategies for the Tax and Compensation & Benefits practices that support firm-wide goals and priorities.
  • Lead regular practice group meetings, including preparing agendas, discussion materials, and managing follow-up actions.
  • Identify and analyze new business opportunities, client growth areas, and cross-selling initiatives across relevant industries, including private equity, financial services, sports, healthcare, and nonprofit sectors.
  • Partner with attorneys to create, implement, and monitor individual business development plans aligned with practice and firm strategy.
  • Support lateral partner integration, ensuring that new partners are positioned for success and connected with relevant business development resources.
  • Support additional practices as business needs require.
  • Client Targeting and Relationship Management Lead and manage client targeting initiatives, including identifying prospects, tracking pursuits, and reporting on outcomes.
  • Partner with the Competitive Intelligence team to research clients, competitors, market trends, and emerging regulatory developments impacting tax and employee benefits.
  • Facilitate cross-selling and collaboration efforts with other practices—particularly Corporate, Private Funds, Labor & Employment, and Litigation—to expand client engagement.
  • Pitches, Proposals, and Marketing Materials Oversee and execute the preparation of high-quality RFP responses, pitches, and presentations that highlight the distinct strengths of both Tax and Compensation & Benefits.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and BD/Marketing colleagues to develop and maintain compelling collateral, including practice descriptions, brochures, experience lists, and capability decks.
  • Ensure messaging reflects the practices’ reputational strengths—such as business-oriented tax counseling, industry-leading fiduciary expertise, and high-profile executive compensation advisory work.
  • Events, Sponsorships, and Thought Leadership Manage business development planning and preparation for client-facing events, including webinars, roundtables, educational programs, and conference engagements.
  • Evaluate and coordinate strategic sponsorship opportunities and participation in industry associations that enhance visibility for the Tax and C&B practices.
  • Partner with the Marketing team to draft and refine content for awards, legal directories, league rankings, and other high-profile submissions.
  • Support the practices’ thought leadership efforts by coordinating publication pipelines, assisting with article placement, and aligning content with market trends and client priorities.
  • Team Leadership Serve as a resource and mentor to other business development professionals, providing guidance, sharing best practices, and supporting team-wide skill development.
