About The Position

The New York Times is seeking a talented, experienced, and versatile correspondent to join the tech pod on the Business desk to cover OpenAI and Anthropic as the artificial intelligence race heats up. This role focuses on two companies that are significantly impacting the future through their fast-advancing technology and becoming new power brokers in Silicon Valley, influencing dealmaking, geopolitics, national security, economics, and Wall Street. The ideal candidate is an energetic, determined, and collegial journalist who excels at competing on compelling and important storylines. Proven success in building and cultivating sources and experience reporting on companies are prerequisites. The correspondent will work closely with other tech reporters globally and engage in a high-metabolism job involving breaking news, second-day stories, analysis, explainers, profiles, accountability stories, and enterprise reporting. Collaboration will extend across multiple desks and teams, including finance, Audio, Video, and Graphics. Responsibilities include writing articles, short Live updates, contributing to newsletters and videos, and participating in collaborative reporting projects.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of significant beat reporting and writing experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce stories that are crisply written and well organized, framed to draw in busy, scrolling readers and delivered in language that is accessible.
  • Experience as a collaborator and the ability to partner with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.

Responsibilities

  • Generate original reporting on news, events, and trends on Anthropic and OpenAI.
  • Identify, in conjunction with colleagues and editors, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news, or enterprise.
  • Build a network of sources to inform rich and original reports, news, and features.
  • Write with authority, clarity, and independently.
  • Handle breaking news as comfortably and enthusiastically as writing thoughtfully and deeply about events, issues, finances, and people.
  • Write medium- and long-term enterprise pieces and occasional entertaining features.
  • Cover news accurately and efficiently.
  • Maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts.
  • Obtain information through interviews, observations, and research.
  • Present facts and analysis in clear written form, conforming to Times style, length, and other requirements.
  • Develop high-impact stories from broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.
  • Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits.
  • Contribute to and sometimes lead live briefings, join planning meetings, and provide live coverage.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • Report to the Business Tech Editors.
