About The Position

The Town of Brookline’s Council on Aging is seeking a reliable, courteous, and safety-focused Bus & Van Driver with a CDL Passenger Endorsement to provide transportation services for older adult residents. This role is essential to helping community members access the Senior Center, essential services, and program activities, supporting their independence and well-being. The Driver operates Council on Aging buses, vans, and other Town-owned vehicles according to an established schedule while maintaining ongoing communication with the office via a Town-issued cell phone.

Requirements

  • Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License, Class B (P designation)
  • Clean driving record that is free of accidents or moving violations, or any other issues that would indicate a history of unsafe driving.
  • Two to three years of commercial bus driving experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Skilled and safety-minded driver with a calm, respectful presence when working with older adults.
  • Communicates clearly
  • Assists passengers comfortably
  • Maintains awareness of vehicle condition and road safety.
  • Dependable, patient, and attentive
  • Able to follow schedules reliably while operating buses and vans in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the daily COA bus route; assist riders getting on and off the bus.
  • Drive riders from their residence to Senior Center, essential locations, and other various field trips as needed.
  • Ensure that the bus and other vehicles are in good operating condition.
  • Clean and fuel the bus and other vehicles; assist in planning schedule of vehicle maintenance; keep the maintenance schedule file up to date.
  • Collect the daily fees paid by riders and turn over monies to the COA office.
  • Treat riders respectfully.
  • Make referrals to social work staff when social service needs are noticed.
  • Contact emergency personnel and follow procedures for falls and other accidents.
  • Use Town-issued cell phone to communicate delays or problems.
  • Assist in providing feedback to annual surveys.
  • Attend trainings as mandated by COA office and Town of Brookline.
  • Participate in Town drug testing program.
  • Keep driver's license in proper order.
  • Perform similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
