About The Position

Ensures the smooth and efficient transportation of students by assisting bus drivers, monitoring student safety, and facilitating communication between schools, parents, and transportation staff. All Transportation employees may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and alcohol testing, as well as random testing throughout employment. Due to federal safety regulation, this includes marijuana/THC/CBD. Any employee having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.

Requirements

  • High School education or equivalent preferred
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License with clean driving record
  • Must meet requirements for School Bus Driver Certification (i.e. pass first aide, CPR, and IVP fingerprint card)
  • Successfully pass bus driver agility test
  • Minimum of one year driving experience in Arizona
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Knowledge of Arizona traffic laws
  • Proficient demonstration of driving skills; ability to drive under pressure
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) with students, parents, coworkers and district personnel at all levels
  • Ability to read and understand routes, maps and schedules; knowledge of street and school locations within the district helpful; proficiency in using routing and communication technology, such as GPS navigation systems, tablets, and district-issued devices, preferred
  • Ability to meet time schedules, punctuality and reliability a must
  • Ability to work varying driving assignments
  • Ability to work both AM & PM bus routes every weekday, this may be a split-shift position
  • Ability to pull, reach, push, bend, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and sit
  • Regularly climbs ladders, crouches, or reaches into tight spaces (e.g., under vehicles)
  • Strong reflexes for steering, braking, and maneuvering the vehicle safely
  • Speaking, hearing, and seeing (with or without correction)
  • Maintaining focus for extended periods
  • Uses hand and power tools that require good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Constantly: up to 30 pounds of force
  • Frequently: up to 30 pounds of force
  • Occasionally: up to 50 pounds of force

Responsibilities

  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Drive any school bus and/or any school van safely to transport students over any scheduled routes and/or any special excursions (field trips, athletic events) for absent bus drivers
  • Drive defensively, courteously and cautiously
  • Perform walk-around pre-trip and post-trip inspections of each bus you drive. Do not drive an unsafe bus or vehicle
  • Do not drive an unsafe bus; maintain cleanliness and sanitation of bus
  • Obey all regulations, policies and laws of the State and District
  • Maintain cleanliness of shop areas
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
