About The Position

The Bus Monitor assists children in safely boarding the bus, helps special needs children into their seats, and ensures that wheelchairs, seat belts, car seats, and booster seats are installed correctly. This role involves assisting students with special needs and helping to maintain positive control over the students transported on the school bus. The Bus Monitor must observe mandatory safety regulations for school buses and report any violations to the proper authorities. They should know the students and have a general knowledge of their special needs. The position requires notifying the supervisor in case of illness to allow time to secure a substitute driver. Additionally, the Bus Monitor promotes good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and maintaining a clean and orderly school bus. Maintaining respect for confidential information, such as student medical records, is crucial. The role involves interacting with the public with tact and diplomacy, and in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents. The Bus Monitor serves as a role model for students and may be assigned other duties by the Transportation Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) – proof required
  • A satisfactory Criminal Check
  • Must hold a valid Ohio Teacher’s Aide Certificate
  • Physical capability of safely and appropriately lifting and managing preschool and special needs children
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Ability to have full control with bus discipline at all times
  • Knowledge of basic first aid
  • Ability to read and understand verbal and written instructions, written warnings and labels
  • Ability to be patient and understanding

Responsibilities

  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation, and the clean/orderly appearance of the school bus.
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student medical records, etc.
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy.
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents.
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Enforce applicable Board policies.
  • Attend bus driver meetings and be available in the event of emergency dismissal.
  • Conduct rear door emergency evacuation drills.
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.
