About The Position

Performs responsible semi-skilled human support work in the transportation of pupils to and from school and special events. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Bus Driver.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of the transportation of students.
  • Some knowledge of transporting handicapped students.
  • Ability to assist students with patience and understanding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, public, associates and students.
  • Good physical and mental health.
  • Ability to assist students with special transportation needs such as wheelchairs, braces, crutches, etc.
  • This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, and grasping.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Visual acuity is required for observing general surroundings and activities.
  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and atmospheric conditions.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in working with children.

Responsibilities

  • Assists bus driver for the purpose of handling emergency situations until the driver can take over.
  • Assists special education students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport and emergency situations.
  • Monitors students with special needs until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe transportation of all passengers.
  • Prepares reports (e.g. seating chart of assigned riders, incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines.
  • Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, ) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate personnel for their action.
  • Secures students and/or their equipment (e.g. restraints, checks wheelchair tie downs, seat belts, opens ramp, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
  • Prepares reports (e.g. monthly reports, seating chart of assigned riders, incident reports, passenger misconduct, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and/or complying with established guidelines.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
