About The Position

The Head Start Bus Monitor assists the school bus driver in maintaining discipline on the bus, managing proper records and documentation, and ensuring the safe loading, unloading, and seating arrangements for students. This role requires a focus on student safety, positive guidance, and effective communication with children, parents, and staff.

Requirements

  • Employment conditional upon results of Criminal History Registry.
  • Requires current Pediatric CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Health appraisal required upon employment.
  • Knowledge of safe practices concerning school bus transportation.
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of how to operate a fire extinguisher.
  • Knowledge of how to use a seat belt cutter.
  • Knowledge of how to operate a communication device to call for assistance.
  • Ability to maintain proper records and documentation.
  • Ability to assist students loading and unloading and establish seating arrangements as required.
  • Ability to understand and relate to children with special needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to lift students appropriately according to established guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.
  • Ability to practice health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledgeable about the installation/maintenance of each type of child restraint system on bus.
  • Ability to safely and securely fasten each child into the restraint system according to recommended practice.
  • Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, typically assisting children into seats.
  • Ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
  • Frequent bending at the neck, waist and knees and occasional squatting.
  • Daily sitting, about 85% or riding time.
  • Occasional climbing to enter and exit bus.
  • High school diploma, GED, Certificate or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a GED as required by Kentucky Law.

Responsibilities

  • Assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while the bus is in operation.
  • Maintain proper records and documentation.
  • Assist student loading, unloading, and seating arrangements as required.
  • Assign a seat location for each child.
  • Keep all children seated at all times.
  • Place a child that is in a seat alone on the bus seat closer to the aisle.
  • Prevent an unsecured passenger from riding in the seat behind a child being restrained in a safety vest or any other child safety restraint system.
  • Utilize positive child guidance at all times.
  • Assist children with safety concepts using the "teachable moment" while child rides the bus to and from school.
  • Assist and participate in 3-4 vehicle evacuation drills during the school year.
  • Assist the bus driver with any emergency situations following all rules and regulations that pertain to school bus safety and child health.
  • Fill out accident/incident reports as appropriate.
  • Follow universal precautions with all children.
  • Leave seat to actively assist children during ride, and get off bus to pick up and drop off child.
  • Teach Head Start children to fasten, adjust, and unfasten seat belts on their own by the time they leave Head Start.
  • Visually observe the health of each child on the bus reporting any concerns to teachers.
  • Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of any child on the bus or the ability of the bus driver to safely operate the vehicle, reporting any behavior issues to child’s teacher.
  • Maintain an up-to-date roster of children assigned to bus route on the bus.
  • Collaborate with the bus driver to ensure that each child is delivered to the care of a responsible adult whose name is on authorized list and who has approved "bus plate."
  • Ensure that no child is ever left unattended while on the bus, following all procedures put in place to prevent a child being left behind.
  • Return child to the school or designated site if no parent/guardian or authorized person is present to accept a child.
  • Escort child across street after waiting for signal from bus driver that it is safe to cross, if child must cross the street before boarding or after leaving the bus.
  • Perform a walkthrough of bus (looking for children and or items left behind) each time route is completed and before leaving bus.
  • Assist with paperwork flow between homes and sites.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality regarding any information about children and families.
  • Maintain positive communications with parents, drivers and site staff, relaying information to appropriate parties as needed.
  • Attend any trainings or meetings as required by Transportation Manager and Head Start staff.
  • Smile and speak to each child using his or her name to set a positive tone for the child’s day.
  • Use age appropriate communication skills with children on the bus.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Head Start Administrators and/or Transportation Director.
