About The Position

The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students, teachers, and others on designated routes and for school-related activities. This role involves daily pre-trip inspections, maintaining the bus, ensuring student safety and discipline, and adhering to all traffic laws and district policies. The driver will also be responsible for record-keeping, emergency procedures, and participating in required training.

Requirements

  • Possess, or be willing to obtain, a valid Indiana CDL.
  • Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus, center and classrooms.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Possess a clean driving record.
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

  • Safely drive a school bus on designated routes in accordance with time schedules.
  • Load and unload students at designated locations.
  • Transport students, teachers, and others on school field or activity trips.
  • Inspect assigned bus daily to ensure it is in good, clean, and safe working order.
  • Clean and refuel bus as needed.
  • Ensure communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
  • Report all mechanical deficiencies, traffic violations, or accidents promptly.
  • Arrange for and ensure completion of routine maintenance of the bus.
  • Transport the bus to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.
  • Maintain order and discipline among students being transported.
  • Report any incidents involving student discipline.
  • Observe and track route timing for efficiency.
  • Maintain and submit records and reports as required.
  • Follow procedures to ensure no child is left alone on the bus and all children have departed at the end of routes.
  • Inventory bus emergency and first aid supplies and equipment; report needs.
  • Prepare aides and children for bus drills and ensure bus evacuation drills are held.
  • In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuate children according to procedures and ensure medical emergency procedures are followed.
  • Complete a written report as required for accidents/emergencies.
  • Attend and participate in trainings and other continuing education, career, and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned.
