About The Position

The Bus Driver will be responsible for driving a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials. This includes performing pre-trip inspections, monitoring vehicle operations, refueling, supervising passenger loading/unloading, and maintaining records of trips, mileage, and passenger counts. The role also involves transporting passengers with disabilities, operating communication equipment, cleaning and fueling vehicles, performing minor emergency repairs, mapping routes, and transporting vehicles to vendors for repairs. This is a designated essential position, requiring the driver to report to work during emergencies. The position is temporary, with both full-time (40 hours/week) and part-time (20 hours/week) options available. Shifts and pass days will vary. The anticipated start date is August 20, 2026, and the anticipated end date is May 26, 2027. Night and weekend work may be required. This is an FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for overtime.

Requirements

  • Possess, maintain, and keep a valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brakes.
  • Be able to be 19A certified as required by New York State DMV.
  • Have a passenger endorsement without restrictions L, Z, N1 or N2.
  • Maintain a motor vehicle record free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment testing for controlled substance use as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991.
  • Comply with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing act (drug and alcohol testing).
  • Successfully clear a background investigation.
  • Provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer (for Out-of-State Applicants).
  • Obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of the official start date (for Out-of-State Applicants).

Responsibilities

  • Drive a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections of the vehicle, checking horn, lights, braking system, and tires, and complete required forms.
  • Monitor gauges and refuel the vehicle as necessary.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers and personal property.
  • Post manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and passengers transported, including compiling count sheets from drivers.
  • Transport passengers with disabilities.
  • Operate radio and/or cellular telephones to communicate with dispatch.
  • Keep written records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel, bridges, tolls, and passenger counts.
  • Report any vehicle malfunctions or needed repairs to the supervisor or maintenance staff, including compiling daily bus logs from drivers.
  • Drive campus routes and perform charters for departments and graduation work for Stony Brook University.
  • Wash, sweep, clean, and fuel buses, vans, and other state vehicles.
  • Perform minor repairs in emergency situations, such as replacing bulbs, adding air to tires, or replacing windshield wiper blades.
  • Map routes, itineraries, and points of call for other drivers and oneself.
  • Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
