About The Position

This position is responsible for operating a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently. The role requires adherence to all traffic laws and school district policies, ensuring the well-being of passengers during transit. Responsibilities include pre-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining a safe driving record, and effective communication with students, parents, and staff.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
  • Three (3) years of general driving experience.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and communicating in English.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must successfully pass drug testing and medical qualification standards on the DOT physical for a CDL License.
  • No prior convictions as specified in SDE New Mexico Standards for School Bus Operations.
  • Physical abilities to perform the physical tasks required for the position.
  • Have a valid and current New Mexico commercial driver's license (CDL Class B) with Air Brake, Passenger, and School Bus Endorsement for Bus Drivers or proof that you are in a training program.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Training should include: Training overview & Policies and Procedures, Standards for Providing Transportation for Eligible Students, Pre Trip Vehicle Inspection, School Bus Driver Security Training, Safety Equipment, Mirrors Adjustment, Reference Point Driving, Passenger Management, Transporting Students with Disabilities Awareness, Drug and Alcohol Awareness, First Aid & CPR Training.
  • Complete 4 Part DMV Test for Issuance of Commercial Learners Permit (CLP).
  • Behind the Wheel Training.
  • Observation time.
  • Defensive Driving Course.
  • Bus Attendant Training.
  • Complete the Behind-the-wheel skill evaluation test for Issuance of Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
