About The Position

The City of Annapolis is seeking reliable, customer-service-oriented professional drivers to fill the role of Bus Driver. This position is responsible for operating City transit buses and other transport vehicles safely and efficiently, ensuring passengers are transported along designated schedules and routes in a secure and timely manner. Beyond driving, the Bus Driver oversees passenger safety, collects fares, manages daily operational logs, and serves as a direct, positive representative of the City of Annapolis to the public. Experienced drivers in this class may also assist in coordinating and mentoring less experienced operations staff.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school course or possession of an approved GED certificate.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience driving a transit bus and providing general public or specialized transportation services.
  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Maryland, complete with Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements.
  • Mandatory consent to chemical substance screening consistent with federal, state, and city guidelines, including pre-employment, post-accident, and random drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Operates City transit vehicles on assigned routes, safely picking up and discharging passengers at designated locations in strict accordance with established schedules.
  • Adheres to all federal, state, and local laws and safety guidelines, including posted speed limits and defensive driving practices.
  • Serves as a relief driver or coordinates specialized routes designed for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.
  • Performs rigorous, mandatory pre-trip inspections prior to leaving the garage and post-trip inspections upon return to ensure vehicular safety.
  • Collects and monitors passenger fares, tickets, or transfers to ensure proper transit compliance.
  • Promptly identifies and reports vehicle defects or mechanical issues to maintenance technicians and supervisors.
  • Compiles accurate daily reports capturing total mileage, passengers transported, fuel/oil usage, and any unusual occurrences or delays.
  • Reports any and all accidents, medical issues, or security incidents involving City vehicles or passengers immediately to the Police Department and transit supervisors.
  • Maintains the interior cleanliness and orderly condition of the assigned vehicle, including regular sweeping, dusting, and washing of the interior cabin.
