About The Position

Under the overall supervision of the Early Childhood Director and the direct supervision of the Center Manager, this role carries out all duties and responsibilities related to the transportation of children and maintenance of designated vehicles and facilities. The position involves driving a bus on a designated route, ensuring the safe transportation of children, and maintaining the cleanliness and operational condition of the bus and facilities.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Three months experience driving a bus or similar size vehicle.
Must have a good driving record.
Experience in minor repairs, lawn and building maintenance.
Basic computer skills.
Must be at least 25 years of age.
Able to pass tuberculosis screening.
Valid commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement or be capable of obtaining a commercial driver’s license with a school bus endorsement.
Successfully pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam prior to employment and annually thereafter.
Successfully pass drug screening prior to employment.
Have access to transportation with liability insurance and willing to use vehicle for Agency related travel.
Able to travel out of area overnight.
Able to hear and communicate orally with children and adults.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Some items may occasionally exceed this limit, use necessary protective equipment and/or get help as needed.
Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations.
Be in sympathy with the concepts of the Head Start Program.
Able to keep confidential information without inappropriately divulging it.
Have planning and organizational abilities to problem solve and provide leadership whenever an emergency occurs.
Able to make decisions and work without continual close supervision.
Must be able to pass background checks.

Responsibilities

Maintain a professional attitude at all times with staff, parents, volunteers and children.
Work with Supervisor in designing bus routes.
Drive bus on designated route morning and afternoon five days a week.
Responsible for safe transportation of children as they board, ride and leave the bus and returned to their parents or other authorized adult.
Responsible for the maintenance of buildings, grounds and bus(es) in a professional and timely manner, including changing air filters, fire extinguisher checks, watering, mowing, trimming and weed-eating, and ensuring buses are in good operating condition.
Clean and safe environment inside and outside the bus through regular cleaning.
Participate in required Random Drug and Alcohol Testing for Bus Drivers.
Participate in classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel instruction training prior to transporting any children.
Maintain accurate records regarding their bus and children who are being transported, including accident reports, pre- and post-trip inspections, maintenance records, and contact information for child release.
Establish written fixed bus routes and alternate routes if necessary.
Collaborate with the Bus Monitor to teach children safe riding practices and safety procedures.
Maintain their assigned vehicle and ensure appropriate safety inspections are completed.
Perform minor repairs as necessary to ensure safe facilities.
Responsible for completion of Maintenance/Work requests in a timely manner and submitting completed orders to Supervisor.
Responsible for setting up facility for special activities in a timely manner.
Assist in moving supplies, furniture or equipment as needed.
Responsible for data management of transportation and designated areas.
Assist in the avoidance or appearance of fraud and ensure compliance in the Transportation area and the overall management of the Center.
Respects confidentiality in all aspects of the Head Start program.
Willing to participate in all training designed for professional development.
Able to handle stress, tension and exasperation that contact with many children and adults may bring every day.
May be called upon to administer first aid to children or staff at any time in the program.
Perform other job-related duties as necessary for the overall operation of the program.
