About The Position

Responsible for the safe transportation of program participants between Park District facilities, to special events or to field trip destinations. The bus driver is also responsible for inspecting the bus, maintaining vehicle records, and communicating maintenance needs.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 21 years old.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Possess currently Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Possess and maintain a good driving record, verified through the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office.
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid from an accredited organization or obtain certification with 2 months of employment.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers, program participants and others in a professional, courteous manner.
  • Ability to operate a bus in a safe manner.
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
  • Ability to demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival to work.
  • Ability to follow instructions and respond to supervisor direction.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holiday hours as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 6 months of bus driving experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with the general public, bus passengers and Park District staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Follows all traffic rules and operates the bus in a safe manner.
  • Ensures the bus is kept clean and inspects the vehicle before and after each use.
  • Assists program participants and other bus passengers into and out of the vehicle, as necessary.
  • Reports immediately any mechanical, maintenance or safety issues related to the bus to the Recreation Facilities Manager.
  • Supports risk management efforts by identifying potential hazards and following established safety procedures.
  • Completes all paperwork required by the Park District’s safety program and fleet maintenance procedures.
  • Communicates by cell phone to Park District staff in the event of a medical emergency, significant behavioral situation, vehicle maintenance problem or other situation where assistance is needed during transportation.
  • Provides first aid as needed.
  • Presents a professional appearance and wear appropriate attire.
  • Follows all district policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, including emergency behavior management procedures.
  • Attends meetings and in-service trainings as necessary.
  • Assists as a chaperone on field trips.
  • Enforces safety rules with bus passengers.
