About The Position

The Bus Driver is responsible for operating a school bus and all related equipment in a safe and efficient manner, obeying all traffic laws and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department. This role ensures a safe and positive riding experience for all students assigned to their bus. The driver must immediately report any collisions, incidents, or job-related injuries, as well as mechanical problems or damage to the bus. Maintaining the cleanliness of the bus interior and ensuring an appropriate fuel level are also key duties. The position requires effective behavior management over groups of children and establishing good rapport with students, parents, school personnel, and coworkers. Responsibilities include loading and unloading students, performing emergency evacuations, attending required trainings and meetings, completing compliance and cybersecurity trainings, and maintaining accurate records. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job function.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with all appropriate endorsements (P)(S) and classifications and all other required licenses, permits, and certificates.
  • Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety that reflects a professional driver and which meets all contractual, local, state and federal requirements.
  • Must pass an annual physical in accordance with state law.
  • Must show negative on a drug and/or alcohol test to be given on a pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and District policy.
  • Must have completed or be enrolled in the School Bus Driver Certification course developed by the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
  • Must maintain certification as required.
  • Must successfully complete the School Bus Driver Training Program provided by the District.
  • Must successfully pass retraining requirements if sent to training by a supervisor.
  • Must be physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to evacuate the bus in an emergency.
  • Ability to speak, read and understand the English language.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism in one’s communications and interactions with children/students, parents, school personnel, and coworkers.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Effective reading, writing, and mathematical skills to complete necessary forms, reports, and interpret maps.
  • Ability to effectively manage student behavior.
  • Ability to safely operate the bus.
  • Must follow District policies and Transportation Services guidelines and procedures.
  • Diabetes - have no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes Mellitus currently requiring insulin for control
  • Hypertension - Blood pressure maximum 160/90
  • Vision - have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye with or without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, field of vision of at least 70 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green and amber.
  • First perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear not less than 5 feet with or without the use of a hearing aid, or if tested by use of an audiometric device, does not have an average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz with or without a hearing aid when the audiometric device is calibrated to American National Standard (formerly ASA Standard) Z24.5-1951.

Responsibilities

  • Operate bus and all related equipment in a safe and efficient manner, obeying all traffic laws and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the department.
  • Provide a safe and positive riding experience for all students assigned to your bus.
  • Immediately report involvement in any collision, incident or job-related injury before the completion of your assigned shift through prescribed guidelines and procedures.
  • Immediately report mechanical problems, damage to bus (interior and exterior) and perform pre-trip/post-trip inspections through prescribed guidelines and procedures.
  • Keep interior of bus clean/neat and maintain appropriate level of fuel as stated in department policy.
  • Maintain effective behavior management over groups of children.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and coworkers.
  • Load and unload students from the bus following prescribed guidelines and procedures.
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus if needed: walking to rear of bus, exiting the rear door and/or lifting students in emergency situations.
  • Attend in-service, required trainings, and safety meetings as required by the department.
  • Complete required online compliance and cybersecurity trainings as required.
  • Maintain accurate, updated records turned in at a timely manner, as required.
  • Check mailbox and email on a regular basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
