About The Position

This position is for the Migrant Child Care Program in Berlin, Wisconsin. The Bus Driver/Janitor is responsible for the maintenance and operation of vehicles, janitorial duties to maintain the center and grounds, and transportation of children. The role also involves ensuring child safety during transport, maintaining records, and assisting with program activities. This position requires adherence to various safety regulations and program policies.

Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a valid CDL Certification with school bus endorsement.
  • Ability to work irregular and/or flexible hours.
  • Be insurable in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Must have a reliable car, valid driver’s license, and adequate insurance.
  • Must have a current DOT physical and possess a current DOT medical card or complete a DOT physical exam prior to transporting children.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  • Must complete a TB test showing absence of Tuberculosis within 30 days of employment.
  • If transporting children for Migrant Seasonal Head Start, must complete approved Shaken Baby Training prior to working with children.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training, Infant/Child CPR and First Aid upon hire or prior to transporting children.
  • Occasional pushing, handling boxes, bending, reaching, and standing for long hours.
  • Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in transporting young children preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct maintenance of vehicles, including seasonal start-up inspections, routine maintenance, and final inspections.
  • Conduct daily walk-around inspections of vehicles before and after use, reporting any issues and replenishing supplies.
  • Maintain an inventory of janitorial supplies and ensure proper posting and accessibility of safety information (Right to Know, MSDS).
  • Ensure chemicals are properly mixed, used, and stored according to the Hazard Communication Program and bloodborne pathogens policy.
  • Maintain a current list of children transported and ensure daily attendance is taken for accountability and security.
  • Supervise, provide technical assistance, and offer input on performance evaluations for Bus Monitors.
  • Participate in child safety checks at the beginning and end of each route, ensuring children are secured and addressing safety concerns.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and program staff, reporting family information/concerns to the Center Manager.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including tracking vehicle operating expenditures and maintenance repairs.
  • Conduct monthly bus evacuation drills with the assistance of the Bus Monitor and HSW, documenting results.
  • Maintain the center in a clean and sanitary condition according to schedule, including emptying trash, cleaning bathrooms, and maintaining floors.
  • Maintain outside building grounds, including lawn cutting, trimming, painting, power washing, and snow removal.
  • Conduct daily inspections of playground and equipment, documenting findings.
  • Transport and assist with supervision of children and parents during meetings, field trips, and at health clinics.
  • Participate in trainings for serving children with disabilities or special needs.
  • Assist with recruitment plan activities, including recruiting children with disabilities.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect according to state law and UMOS policies.
  • Develop bus routes in coordination with Family Services and the Center Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
