About The Position

Wilkes County Schools is seeking a full-time, 10-month Bus Driver/Custodian. This role involves operating a school bus on assigned routes and schedules to ensure safe and efficient student transportation. Additionally, the position includes performing custodial duties to maintain school buildings. Custodians hired on or after 9/1/18 will be required to substitute as bus drivers as needed. This position offers a variety of state and local benefits, including health insurance, annual and sick leave, holiday pay, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, and a state pension plan, along with a local salary supplement of 5%.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Some experience driving large vehicles preferred.
  • Some experience transporting humans preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with school bus certification.
  • Must be physically able to operate a school bus.
  • Must be able to quickly decelerate the bus and firmly apply the brake in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to turn the steering wheel of the vehicle rapidly in an emergency situation.
  • Must be able to begin in a seated position with seat belt fastened, parking brake released, and engine running, secure the bus, rise from the seat, exit through the rearmost emergency exit, and be in position to assist passengers in exiting the bus within 20 seconds.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to read correspondence, reports, instructions, etc.
  • Ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in operating a school bus.
  • Ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber.
  • Ability to talk and/or hear.
  • Sufficient hearing ability to distinguish warning sounds made by horns, screeching tires, sirens, grade-crossing alarms and train whistles.
  • Considerable knowledge of safe and efficient practices and procedures used in the operation of a school bus.
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and school bus regulations.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety regulations and standards for school buses.
  • General knowledge of Transportation Department instructions.
  • Ability to physically inspect the bus according to Transportation Department instructions.
  • Ability to detect and report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
  • Ability to maintain discipline of students assigned to ride the school bus.
  • Ability to maintain a clean school bus.
  • Ability to complete required reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in applying standards to a variety of work situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents/guardians or students and with school personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Some experience in custodial work.
  • Custodians with an effective date of hire 9/1/18 and beyond must hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement or be willing and eligible to obtain a CDL driver’s license with P/S endorsements at the next training opportunity.
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Requires the ability to read simple forms.
  • Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and maintenance reports using prescribed format.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
  • General Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.
  • Ability to perform medium physical work.

  • Custodians with an effective date of hire 9/1/18 and beyond must hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement or be willing and eligible to obtain a CDL driver’s license with P/S endorsements at the next training opportunity. If a candidate does not pursue a CDL drivers license with P/S endorsements at the next training opportunity or is ineligible to obtain a CDL drivers license with P/S endorsements for any reason, this could result in recommendation for dismissal.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a school bus on assigned route(s) and schedule to provide safe and efficient transportation for students.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of the bus, documenting as required.
  • Reports mechanical defects or failures to the transportation director or mechanic.
  • Observes all traffic laws, school bus regulations, and safety standards.
  • Maintains discipline of students assigned to the bus, establishing a plan consistent with school objectives.
  • Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority.
  • Discharges students only at authorized school or bus stop locations.
  • Transports only authorized students.
  • Keeps the school bus clean and free of items that may present a safety problem.
  • Reports all accidents as required and remains at the scene until released.
  • Completes all required reports, including accident or incident reports.
  • Remains in charge of students during an accident, assessing injuries and maintaining passenger safety.
  • Secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
  • Maintains acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students and school personnel.
  • Performs other related work as required.
  • May shuttle buses between schools and the transportation shop.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces.
  • Cleans restroom areas and replenishes supplies.
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures.
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.
  • Empties trash receptacles and deposits recyclable material.
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways, polices grounds, and shovels snow/applies de-icing compounds as necessary.
  • Replaces burned-out light bulbs.
  • Prepares requisition forms for necessary supplies.
  • Sets traps for rodents and other pests.
  • Raises and lowers flags at the start and end of the workday.
  • Performs minor maintenance on appliances as abilities allow.
  • May open and secure buildings, turn lights on/off, and adjust heating or air conditioning.
  • May arrange furniture for meetings or other events.
  • Substitutes as a bus driver as needed (for custodians hired on or after 9/1/18).
