About The Position

The Bus Driver Custodian is responsible for ensuring children are transported safely and appropriately. This role involves supervising children on the bus, performing routine maintenance, and notifying supervisors of needed repairs. The position also includes keeping the building clean and orderly, and maintaining the premises by clearing snow and debris from sidewalks.

  • Seven (7) years of regular driving experience.
  • Must be at least 25 years of age.
  • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B or C with passenger (P1) (P2), and school bus (S) endorsements.
  • Medical Examiners Certificate.
  • Must provide a yearly driving abstract.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving history.
  • Proof of automobile insurance.
  • Ability to travel to perform job duties and responsibilities.
  • Must pass initial and periodic background check.
  • Must pass initial and periodic employee health clearance (present within forty-five (45) days of employment).
  • Current Food Handler card (obtain training within thirty (30) days of employment).
  • Current First Aid / CPR cards (obtain training within thirty (30) days of employment).
  • Subject to initial and periodic TB screen.
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV / AIDS) training (obtain training within thirty (30) days of employment).
  • Blood Borne Pathogen training (obtain training within thirty (30) days of employment).
  • Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per IDC Drug and Alcohol policy.
  • Must sign a Confidentiality Agreement.
  • Must complete and sign a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement on an annual basis.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
  • Two (2) years driving commercial experience or large load transportation.
  • English/Spanish bi-lingual fluency.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, program recipients, and the general public.
  • High standards of work ethics - cleanliness and sanitation.

Responsibilities

  • Transporting children safely and appropriately.
  • Supervising children on the bus.
  • Keeping the building clean and orderly.
  • Performing routine maintenance activities.
  • Notifying supervisors of needed repairs.
  • Keeping premises neatly groomed and safe by cleaning snow and debris from sidewalks.
  • Ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of all bus occupants while in route.
  • Establishing and maintaining bus routes in coordination with the Family Service Worker for review and approval by the Center Manager.
  • Running fixed routes as written, without unauthorized changes.
  • Limiting cell phone usage for emergency purposes and other agency-prescribed protocols.
  • Ensuring general maintenance of buses and maintaining a clean and hygienic environment.
  • Keeping the bus in working order.
  • Maintaining and completing attendance logs, mileage logs, and maintenance logs daily.
  • Providing training to Bus Monitor(s) throughout the year as needed.
  • Providing in-service training to staff and parents.
  • Conducting Emergency Bus Evacuations.
  • Participating in local center meetings to provide orientation on bus safety/protocols, including safety drills and evacuation plans.
  • Providing/receiving written/oral information between center staff and parent participants.
  • Immediately reporting incidents, accidents, or unusual situations that could place a child at risk of injury.
  • Conducting a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle daily and reporting suspected mechanical problems.
  • Conducting a thorough post-trip inspection for children or other items left on board.
  • Sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning, and disinfecting classrooms, sinks, restrooms, and common areas.
  • Disposing of all garbage and disinfecting wastebaskets or garbage cans daily.
  • Keeping outside equipment clean and in good/safe working condition.
  • Stripping, waxing, and polishing floors and shampooing carpets according to the center schedule.
  • Keeping sidewalks, parking lots, and playground areas safe from hazards.
  • Ensuring all doors and windows are securely locked before closing the center.
  • Discussing unique concerns of the facility and reporting any unsafe equipment to the Safety Committee Chairperson and/or Center Manager.
  • Replacing outside light bulbs, exit lights, and performing minor exterior center repairs, plumbing, and painting.
  • Checking and changing furnace filters as needed.
  • Performing lawn maintenance as needed, including cutting grass, watering, weed control, and landscaping.
  • Being familiar with the Hazardous Materials Program and ensuring chemicals and cleaning supplies are stored and locked in a childproof cabinet.
  • Preparing and maintaining inventories of janitorial supplies, and reporting/requesting needed items to the Center Manager.
  • Assisting the head cook and/or cook in storing and dating groceries.
  • Showing interest in furthering professional growth by attending staff meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of program and client-related information at all times.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
