About The Position

The Bus Aide assists in providing safe and efficient transportation for students, ensuring they travel to and from school in a safe, supportive, and caring environment. This role involves monitoring student behavior, implementing accommodations from Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and supporting students' medical and safety needs. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, experience working with children, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to board and exit a school bus multiple times per shift
Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach as necessary
Ability to assist students during emergency evacuations
Ability to lift and/or assist students and mobility equipment consistent with district training and safety procedures
Ability to secure wheelchairs, safety restraints, and other adaptive equipment as required
Ability to maintain balance and move safely within a moving school bus to monitor students, provide assistance, and respond to emergencies

Responsibilities

Monitor the behavior of assigned student(s) and/or all students on the bus.
Work collaboratively with the bus driver and Director of Transportation to implement transportation-related accommodations and supports identified in the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Familiarize yourself with all student(s) documentation, such as “SNAPSHOT” document (formerly PASSPORT), if applicable.
Redirect the student(s) when they fail to follow rules and procedures.
Document and submit to the Assistant Director of Transportation, via a Transportation Discipline Form, any behaviors that violate the expected bus conduct and are failed to be modified upon redirection.
Attend any meetings regarding the student(s), as requested.
Complete and submit time sheets to Director of Transportation.
Maintain the safety of student(s) at all times, including avoiding dangerous situations, recognizing hazards, responding appropriately to danger signals, and handling unknown objects.
Support the medical needs of assigned student(s) as necessary to increase the student’s safety.
Follow medical crisis plans as necessary for student(s) with medical needs.
Supervise student(s) and manage student behaviors using basic management techniques throughout the entire bus ride, including redirection, modeling, positive reinforcement, and other district-approved behavior management strategies.
Work and communicate with the bus driver to create and maintain seating charts.
Display enthusiasm and promote a friendly environment.
Participate in all appropriate trainings provided by the Transportation Department.
Prompt student(s) to remain seated and out of the bus aisle.
Assist student(s) and their belongings while boarding and exiting the bus, as needed.
Know how to safely secure student’s seatbelt/restraints, as trained by District Transportation staff, if applicable.
Properly secure wheelchairs in approved tie-down systems, as trained by District Transportation staff, if applicable.
Maintain confidentiality of student information and records in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.
