About The Position

The Buildings and Grounds Labourer is responsible for supporting the maintenance, operation, cleanliness, and appearance of municipal buildings, facilities, grounds, and public spaces. The position performs a variety of labour, maintenance, custodial, landscaping, and facility support duties to ensure municipal assets remain safe, clean, and welcoming to employees, residents, and visitors.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work cooperatively and safely as part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Comfortable utilizing maintenance and landscaping equipment or hand tools.
  • Ability to demonstrate accountability, sound judgment, and initiative, while maintaining required records.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
  • Capable of using SiteDocs or other municipal software to record and document safety talks, toolbox talks, incident reports, hazard identification, and other related health and safety reports.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe work culture, incorporating safe work practices in daily activities.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality regarding all matters pertaining to the municipality.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED) and/or post-secondary training in a related field considered an asset.
  • Experience in building maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, custodial services, construction, or public works is considered an asset.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s licence with clean driver’s abstract is considered an asset.
  • Valid certification or willingness to obtain: Standard First Aid, Traffic Control Person (TCP) and Temporary Workplace Signer, Confined Space Awareness, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) Awareness, Fall Protection, Defensive/Winter Driving, Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations, Equipment Operation Training (where applicable): Excavator, backhoe, sidewalk plow, skid steer, Chainsaw Safety (if applicable).

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of municipal buildings and facilities.
  • Complete landscaping, maintenance, and repair of municipal facilities and properties, including, but not limited to, mowing grass, whipper snipping, raking, planting, and lawn care.
  • Assist with snow removal, sanding, salting, and winter maintenance activities.
  • Complete the cleaning and maintenance of municipal buildings, washrooms, common areas, and facilities, including replenishing supplies and collecting garbage from properties and facilities.
  • Assist with maintaining and organizing the inventory of Buildings and Grounds tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assist with traffic control, as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with co-workers and management to promote a safe and positive workplace culture, while contributing to continuous improvement and service quality.
  • Safely operate municipal vehicles, grounds maintenance equipment, hand and power tools, and small machinery.
  • Participate in daily pre-work job assessments and toolbox talks, ensuring that all job specific safety reviews, controls, and other requirements are in place prior to beginning work.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance, including reporting equipment deficiencies, repairs, or safety concerns.
  • Respond to after-hours or emergency callouts when required, including evenings and weekends.
  • Operate assigned municipal vehicles with GPS systems and regularly verify that the system is functioning correctly, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Perform duties in accordance with applicable federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and municipal policies.
  • Maintain courteous and positive public relations with residents, representatives of organizations, and visitors by delivering quality service.
