About The Position

The Building Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing coverage for classroom teachers in various grade levels and subjects throughout the building. The goal is to motivate each student to acquire the knowledge, skills and principles of the day’s lesson, and to assist in achieving no loss in student instruction time. This role aims to enhance student learning, promote the overall efficiency of the school system, and maximize the educational opportunities available to each child. Building Substitute positions are considered classified employees of the Iowa City Community School District. The work day consists of eight hours each day in an assigned building (or in other buildings on an as needed basis) in various assignments/buildings throughout the district. The assignment length is 177 days (full school year, follow student calendar plus 2 additional days) and is paid hourly.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa Teaching Certificate, Substitute License or Substitute Authorization
  • Ability to be available to substitute on a regular basis with little, to no advanced notice
  • Regular access to phone or internet
  • Strong communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide coverage for classroom teachers in various grade levels and subjects throughout the building.
  • Teach the content and skills in the daily lesson plans to pupils.
  • Encourage students to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers regarding student behavior and general activity.
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as directed by lesson plans and building supervisors.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other staff members in helping students solve learning, attitude and health problems.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons and communicate those objectives to the students.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service activities as directed by building supervisors.
  • Maintain professional competence through professional growth.
  • Maintain accurate, complete records of student attendance and progress as needed.
  • Keeps appropriate records of the day’s events for the classroom teachers.
  • Assume additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by building supervisors.
