About The Position

The Fayetteville Public Library is seeking a Building Services Worker to perform daily cleaning procedures, maintain library facilities and equipment, and assist with event execution. This role involves ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff, while also contributing to the overall security and operational efficiency of the library.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED, plus 2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Intermediate language skills including the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Ability to read and understand simple instructions, simple correspondence, notes, letters, and memos.
  • Basic mathematical skills including the ability to add and subtract, and to measure weights and volumes such as fluid ounces, gallons, and pounds.
  • Basic reasoning skills including the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions, ability to plan and prioritize short-term and long-term tasks, and ability to problem solve.
  • Minimum computer skills including the ability to send and receive e-mail and give reports and updates via e-mail.
  • Intermediate mechanical skills including the ability to operate power tools independently and under supervision, ability to help maintain library facilities and equipment, and ability to troubleshoot.
  • Basic customer service skills including the ability to interact with external customers using exemplary customer service skills.
  • Must be able to handle/interact with all chemicals used (i.e. bleach, wax, etc).

Nice To Haves

  • Formal training in custodial related field is a plus.
  • Multilingual skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively communicate with patrons regarding library products, programs, services, policies, and code of conduct, blending creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making to enhance the customer experience, de-escalate negative situations, and resolve inquiries.
  • Ask open-ended questions to assess customer needs, tailor approaches, and provide recommendations using institutional knowledge to connect customers with the right solutions for routine and complex inquiries.
  • Perform assigned daily cleaning procedures within time limits and in accordance with FPL policy in designated areas.
  • Clean all public and staff bathrooms, restock supplies, empty trash, and prepare for opening.
  • Sweep and mop all hard surface floors, auto scrub and buff terrazzo, and clean conveyor hallway.
  • Vacuum all soft surface floors, computers, card catalog, and upholstery.
  • Clean and/or polish all stainless steel, including elevators, stairways, glass, doors, wood surfaces, and security gates.
  • Remove recyclables, pick up stray trash in the parking deck, empty all parking deck trash cans, and clean cans as needed, using only approved, 'green' products.
  • Collect all library refuse, keeping trash separate from recyclables.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety equipment and procedures, carrying out job responsibilities to minimize the risk of injury to self, other staff, vendors, customers, and the Library. Maintain all equipment in like-new condition.
  • Complete laundry tasks.
  • Respond to staff housekeeping requests as appropriate.
  • Assist with a diverse range of tasks necessary for event execution, including set-up, tear-down, managing event flow (traffic, parking, people movement, signage), securing entrances and exits, guiding volunteers and outside vendors, and assisting with decorations.
  • Help orient new staff, ensuring a smooth acclimation to the library and its culture. Train staff members as assigned and monitor volunteers on special projects, reporting training issues to the Building Services Manager.
  • Monitor library physical security, reporting safety and security issues to the manager, and preparing accurate and detailed incident reports as assigned.
  • Display excellent time management, attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Work proactively to balance multiple tasks and prioritize work, completing tasks at an appropriate pace with a sense of urgency. Seek out areas that require cleaning and take initiative.
  • Collaborate with the supervisor on departmental projects to ensure smooth operation. Conduct special projects as assigned.
  • Protect library assets and ensure building security by monitoring security gates, adhering to library policies, and following appropriate closing procedures.
  • Model and support the library brand at all times. Participate in meetings and activities of the department and library. Assist with library services, programs, events, and outreach opportunities as needed.
  • Assist in safety and security planning and implementation. Carry out emergency procedures.
  • Perform landscaping jobs as needed, including weeding, watering, and sprinkler system maintenance.
  • Assume personal responsibility for the building's condition and solve minor issues and problems as they arise.
  • Report to work punctually, dressed in approved uniform, and fully prepared for each scheduled shift.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
