About The Position

The MVA Building Security Officer II (Grade 9) position is responsible for protecting the safety and security of persons, equipment, and facilities on state property. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for customers, employees, and visitors to MVA properties. The role involves establishing a security presence by operating and maintaining weapons detection equipment to detect and identify weapons that may cause harm or be used to commit violence. Employees in this classification do not have supervisory responsibility. In this position, the incumbent will staff a “Weapons Detection System” at an MVA Branch Office and will have the working title of Weapons Detection System Operator. The employee will receive general supervision from a Police Officer or other designated supervisor. Employees may be required to work a rotating shift and are subject to call-in duty. In addition to monitoring the Weapons Detection System, the Building Security Officer may be required to perform other security-related duties, such as checking public and restricted areas for suspicious conditions and monitoring customers and staff to maintain order and deter crimes against persons and/or property.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and the ability to read and write.
  • Two (2) years of experience in building security work.
  • U.S. Armed Forces military service experience may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in Maryland (if assigned duties requiring operating an automobile).

Responsibilities

  • Setting up and operating the weapons detection system at designated entrances to screen persons, bags, and other belongings.
  • Monitoring the weapons detection system to identify objects and determine whether said objects are harmful or prohibited.
  • Screening visitors, staff, and bags to identify potential threats, such as guns or knives, using automated scanning technology.
  • Communicating with individuals being screened through the weapons detection system, providing instructions, and ensuring compliance.
  • Monitoring the customer queue to ensure orders are processed and detect potential conflicts.
  • Identifying threats and/or objects that trigger alarms through the weapons detection system and taking appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.
  • Taking possession of and securing any item that has been identified as a weapon or prohibited object.
  • Documenting as required.
  • Working with MVA Police to address any security issues or threats identified during the screening process.
  • Use a hand-held weapons detection device on individuals who have been alerted by the primary weapons detection system.
  • Monitoring restricted areas of the MVA to ensure that only authorized personnel have access.
  • Checking public and restricted areas for suspicious conditions and monitoring customers and staff to maintain order and deter crimes against persons and/or property.
  • Writing reports to document noteworthy incidents.
