About The Position

The School Security Officer maintains order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating student code violations of school board policies, and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events. This role is responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. The position assists administrative staff with enforcing policies and procedures for safe and orderly schools at the building level. This position is restricted exclusively to female applicants pursuant to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (42 U.S.C. 2000e-2(e)(1)). Sex is a Bona Fide Occupational Qualification (BGOQ) necessary for the normal operation of this specific role, as duties strictly require conducting mandatory, same-sex physical searches and supervising sex-segregated private facilities (such as female restrooms and locker rooms) to ensure student privacy and safety.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma with some experience or training in a security related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess knowledge of, and ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices.
  • Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board Policies and procedures and Student Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Security experience in a public school setting.
  • Must possess the ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must have basic skills using Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management and criminal justice preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds and parking lots to deter, detect, report and stop violations of the law and/or school board policies.
  • Conduct mandatory same-sex physical searches of female students, lockers, and personal belongings as directed.
  • Monitor female-segregated areas (e.g. restrooms, locker rooms) to ensure safety and privacy compliance.
  • Detects, investigates and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
  • Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
  • Supervises and directs pupil movement.
  • Notifies the supervisor, administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Conducts searches when directed to do so, lockers and etc.
  • Investigates student violations of school board policies and prepare reports of the results.
  • Works with school administrators and law enforcement in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
  • Testifies in court and at School Board Disciplinary Control Panels hearings as required.
  • Assists with fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
  • Supervises classroom behavior in lieu of faculty.
  • Maintain security records, logs and reports.
  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required by state law of directed by the Public Service Department.
  • Abides by Public Service Department guidelines, directives and post orders.
  • Reads and responds to email communications.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor, principal or other appropriate administrator.
