About The Position

This position assists with plan review coordination and provides frontline assistance for the Building Safety Division within the City of Yuma Community Development Department. Under basic supervision, the Building Plans Examiner I reviews residential and commercial project construction plan submittals for compliance with building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, land use, and accessibility codes. The role supports the City's commitment to professionalism, accountability, integrity, and responsiveness, serving the community and building relationships.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three years of construction or inspection experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and local building, construction, and safety codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of regulations, protocols, and standards for reviewing building plans for technical compliance.
  • Skill in interpreting and applying building and safety standards, regulations, and City codes and policies.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining plan review records and reports.
  • Skill in researching technical issues and providing technical guidance on code requirements.
  • A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required.
  • International Code Conference (ICC) Building Plans Examiner (Residential Reviews only) Certification is required within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews construction plan submittals, specifications, and calculations for uniformity and compliance with adopted building codes and ordinances.
  • Enters plan review comments into a computer tracking database.
  • Ensures City codes and policies are followed and equitably interpreted.
  • Performs duties within the scope of authority and training; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Provides customer service, researches code requirements, and explains the review process.
  • Researches land use history and provides building code requirements at pre-development meetings.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior.
  • Promotes City goals and priorities, vision, values, and the “Yuma Way”.
  • Complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
