About The Position

The City of Bartow, FL is seeking an experienced Building Official to lead its permitting and inspection services. This role requires a blend of technical construction expertise, customer service skills, and leadership abilities. The Building Official will oversee the City's Building Department, which is transitioning from a contracted service model to a full-service in-house operation. The ideal candidate will be a progressive, customer-focused leader with extensive knowledge of construction, permitting, and inspection standards, possessing a solutions-oriented approach and strong communication skills. They will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of the Building Department, promoting continuous service improvement and efficient work processes.

Requirements

  • Minimum of four years of higher education in construction, engineering, architecture, building technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional public experience in Building Inspection, Design, Construction, or a related field; alternatively, up to five years of post-secondary construction education combined with work experience totaling 10 years.
  • Five years of supervisory experience in a senior capacity.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation mandated licensing as Building Code Administrators within six months following appointment.
  • Additional certifications related to Building Code Inspector, Plans Examiner, Roofing Inspector, Residential Plans Examiner, Modular Plans Examiner, Construction Management, or related areas.
  • Experience presenting before boards and commissions.
