The Building Official in the Department of Community Development plays a crucial role in making a daily difference in the Campbell County organization and locality through hard work, open and honest communication, ongoing improvement, and accountability. This position involves directing the operations of Building Inspections, overseeing fee collection and permit issuance, and supervising the inspection of buildings for adherence to construction standards and code requirements. The role also includes ensuring compliance with handicapped accessibility standards, collaborating with State and local Fire Marshal’s offices, and assisting other local staff such as the Zoning Office and Commissioner of Revenue. The Building Official is responsible for providing code books and materials, advising on changes, supervising technical and administrative personnel, making final decisions on technical problems, and maintaining departmental records. Additionally, this role assists the Director with administrative duties, participates in the Project Evaluation Committee, reviews permit applications and building plans, performs onsite inspections, conducts investigations, and provides technical assistance to various stakeholders. A key responsibility is the initial and updated training for Code Enforcement Officers to ensure compliance with state requirements and performance standards. The Building Official is also responsible for the care and maintenance of any assigned vehicle and prepares budget recommendations for Building Inspections.
