About The Position

The Building Maintenance Worker maintains the physical integrity of facilities by performing custodial, groundskeeper, semi-skilled building maintenance, and repair duties. This role involves general campus, buildings, grounds, and custodial maintenance and repairs, including tasks such as replacing light bulbs, resetting tripped breakers, repairing furniture, clearing plumbing, painting, and trash removal. The position also includes monitoring HVAC units, power washing, clearing walkways, cleaning spills, operating security systems, opening campus facilities, and managing maintenance supplies. Additionally, the role involves grounds maintenance like mowing and landscaping, and potentially supervising daily campus activities and maintenance staff in the absence of the Campus Facility Supervisor. The Building Maintenance Worker also provides setup for campus activities and rentals, and supports the district's relationship with the public through courteous and professional behavior, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to Governing Board Policies.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED equivalent
Two years of building maintenance or custodial experience
A valid Arizona State Driver's License is required
Skill in performing general preventative and corrective building and grounds repairs and maintenance.
Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
Ability to follow established safety policies, procedures, and practices.
Skill in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments with minimum supervision.
Skill in understanding, explaining, and applying relevant rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.

Responsibilities

Performs general campus, buildings, grounds, and custodial maintenance and repairs to include replacing light bulbs, resetting tripped breakers, repairing chairs, desks, tables, clearing clogged plumbing and drains, painting classrooms and other areas, and collecting and removing trash.
Checks and monitors heating and cooling units to ensure they are working properly; contacts HVAC mechanics or outside contractors as required.
Power washes sidewalks and building exteriors.
Clears walkways.
Cleans hazardous material spills and bodily fluids as needed.
Operates security alarm systems to arm and disarm buildings as needed.
Opens campus by unlocking doors and gates.
Orders, receives, controls, and issues maintenance supplies and equipment.
Delivers campus supplies and equipment.
Ensures security of all stored supplies and equipment.
Paints classrooms and other areas; replaces light switches; replaces floor and ceiling tiles; changes filters for evaporative coolers and HVAC units; inspects fire extinguishers.
Performs grounds maintenance and landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, caring for plants, grass, shrubs, and trees, raking, mulching, fertilizing, and weeding.
Irrigates and waters lawns.
In the event of the absence of the Campus Facility Supervisor, maintains and supervises daily campus activities and maintenance staff.
Provides set up for campus activities and rentals.
Supports the relationship between the Phoenix Union High School District and the public by demonstrating courteous and professional behavior when interacting with students, parents, visitors, and school staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and school information; follows Governing Board Policies; performs all other related duties as required or assigned.
