About The Position

Under immediate supervision performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance, repair, installation, and remodeling work on County buildings, stationary equipment, and facilities; performs electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, concrete and masonry, drywall and plaster, and roofing work; completes and maintains related records and reports; ensures proper work safety standards; and performs related duties as assigned. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives immediate supervision from assigned management or supervisory personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. The job functions listed below are not inclusive or exclusive and are intended only as illustrations or examples of the various types of work that may be performed in various divisions/departments. Types of work performed shall be within the scope and licensure (if required) for the classification. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law. Some duties, knowledge, skills, and abilities may be performed in a learning capacity for entry-level (I Level) positions.

Requirements

  • Principles, practices, equipment, tools, and material used in the construction, maintenance, installation, and repair of County buildings, facilities, and equipment, including related codes.
  • Use, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, and shop equipment and tools used in building trades and maintenance.
  • Principles, practices, methods, tools, and techniques used in a wide range of skilled and semiskilled building trades work.
  • Safety procedures, safety equipment and practices, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and ordinances relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
  • Perform a wide range of skilled and semiskilled building trades work.
  • Perform inspections and identify maintenance and repair needs.
  • Safely operate a variety of tools and equipment to effectively perform the work.
  • Gauge necessary materials and equipment needed for assigned projects.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory levels.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, at a level necessary to effectively perform the work.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance supplemented by specialized training in building maintenance and construction. One (1) year of increasingly responsible work experience in the building trades including construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings and related equipment and facilities.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of appointment, an appropriate California driver license.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance, repair, installation, and remodeling work on County buildings, stationary equipment, and facilities, such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, concrete and masonry, drywall and plaster, and roofing.
  • Assists with inspecting facilities and buildings for damage and maintenance needs; recommends repairs as necessary.
  • Plans necessary equipment and materials for assigned projects; ensures proper materials and supplies required for the work; monitors inventory levels of materials and equipment as needed.
  • Performs electrical work including running and adding new data lines, breakers, and lighting, and fixtures; maintains electric gates, timers, belts, wheels, and rollers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, plumbing, painting, metal fabrication, and modifications to parts and equipment.
  • Constructs and replaces furniture; replaces doors, windows, locks, carpet, and tiles.
  • Completes and maintains a variety of records, reports, and related documents.
  • Observes and complies with all County and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
