About The Position

Positions assigned to this class perform inspections of construction related activities, building service equipment, damaged structures and existing occupancies to ensure compliance with the adopted codes of the city, state and federal laws and regulations covering residential, commercial and industrial projects and occupancies. Performs building permit plan review for small residential projects. Communicates code concepts and requirements to contractors, trades persons, owners, developers, answer and respond to code related questions.

Requirements

  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years paid fulltime experience in construction inspection, residential building plan reviewer, on site construction superintendent, trades person (framer, mechanical, electrical or plumbing) or quality assurance inspector.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona.

  • ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification (must obtain within one year of appointment)

Responsibilities

  • Inspects industrial, commercial and residential buildings during construction and checks for compliance with adopted codes, laws and regulations.
  • Inspects buildings or structures that have been damaged or are dilapidated to assess extent of damage, identify immediate safety hazards and create reports regarding scope of permitting, plan review and inspection.
  • Respond to customer questions, explains code requirements and necessary corrections about construction site inspection and code regulations.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of inspection, stop works orders and citations.
  • Issue certificates of completion.
  • Reviews special inspection reports and other field submitted documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Review plans and permit applications for small residential projects as needed for maintaining customer service goals.
  • Commercial and residential building inspection to verify compliance with approved construction plans, building and zoning codes and other applicable City, State and Federal codes and ordinances.
  • May assist in the review files for inactive, revoked, or expired permits; initiate action against expired permits or to correct code violations.
  • May issue notice to comply on violations, inputs data history into City databases for possible legal action, note required corrections where necessary during plan review.
  • Support the City’s policies, goals and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures.
