About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Chief Building Official, inspects routine and complex structural systems at various stages of new construction as well as alterations and repairs; ensures compliance with building codes, and general land use standards, acts to protect life and safety of the public concerning work by ensuring compliance with all adopted city, state, and national construction codes. This position involves a great deal of interaction with the public including codes and ordinances to builders, contractors, designers, homeowners and other customers.

Requirements

  • High School/GED.
  • Building Inspector I: 2 Years municipal building department experience or construction related experience. A combination of verifiable work experience in different aspects of construction and post high school course work in building codes and construction related curriculum may be substituted for experience requirement.
  • Building Inspector I: Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC within one (1) year of hire or State of Colorado Journeyman's or Master Plumber's license or Journeyman's or Master Electrician's license required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Building Inspector II: 3 Years municipal building department experience or construction related experience. A combination of verifiable work experience in different aspects of construction and post high school course work in building codes and construction related curriculum may be substituted for experience requirement.
  • Building Inspector II: Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC within 1 year of hire and; Two (2) of the following certifications required: ICC certification in the building, plumbing or mechanical disciplines; OR State of Colorado Journeyman's license; or State of Colorado Master Electrician's license.
  • Building Inspector III: 5 Years municipal building department experience or construction related experience. A combination of verifiable work experience in different aspects of construction and post high school course work in building codes and construction related curriculum may be substituted for experience requirement.
  • Building Inspector III: Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC required within one year of hire.
  • Building Inspector III: Two (2) of the following certifications required: ICC certification in the building, plumbing or mechanical disciplines; OR State of Colorado Master Electrician's license.
  • Building Inspector IV: 8 Years experience in Municipal building inspection. A combination of verifiable work experience in different aspects of construction and post high school course work in building codes and construction related curriculum may be substituted for experience requirement.
  • Building Inspector IV: Commercial Building Inspector certification from the ICC is required
  • Building Inspector IV: Three of the following certifications are required: ICC Certification in the building, plumbing, or mechanical disciplines, OR State of Colorado Master Electrician's license required
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sufficient to perform essential functions, of city, state, and national and related codes; of methods, materials, and techniques of trade; and of safety practices and precautions.
  • Ability to interpret plans and blue prints, to diagnose hazards and defects, to enforce and maintain regulations fairly and tactfully, and to establish successful working relationships with involved parties.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, be a team player and customer service oriented.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews applications and plans during inspections for conformity with all adopted city, state, and national codes, while remaining current with construction technology.
  • Inspects routine and complex structural building systems at various stages of new construction as well as alterations and repairs, sign installations; ensures compliance with zoning and general land use standards; acts to protect life and ensure safety of the public concerning local building codes, by inspecting buildings for compliance with the local, state and national codes.
  • Informs contractor and owners, architects/engineers and designers of non-compliance with codes and specifications through effective communication, both written and verbal.
  • Requests removal of faulty or dangerous installations.
  • Prepares records of inspection activities and prepares reports.
  • Prepares and posts Stop Work notices as required and/or directed.
  • Responds to requests for code-related information from customers and staff members.
  • Represents Building Division at Construction Advisory Board (CAB) meetings as required.
  • Assists public with preparation of permits and explains how to comply with ordinances.
  • Consults with the Building Official regarding construction and electrical regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
