About The Position

The Building Inspector is a skilled technical position that conducts inspections on commercial and residential construction projects. This role ensures construction projects are compliant with all provisions of the building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and related codes, as well as specific standards for materials, workmanship, and safety, and city ordinances. The position requires maintaining the highest level of customer service while interacting with contractors, homeowners, the public, and other city departments. This position reports directly to the Building Official.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years related experience; or equivalent education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas "Class C" driver license or higher.
  • Knowledge of building codes, ordinances, and regulations related to building, electrical, plumbing, and/or safety.
  • Ability to field inspect job sites, walk construction sites, and climb ladders to inspect high places.
  • Skill in operating a vehicle.
  • Ability to review site and construction plans and specifications and apply code requirements.
  • Ability to work closely with Code Enforcement Officers and Code Enforcement Management.
  • Ability to learn non-structural code enforcement.
  • Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening.
  • A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree preferred.
  • ICC Certification as Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical or Combination Inspector or two years special training in municipal inspections is preferred.
  • Master Electrician license and/or a Master Plumber license preferred.
  • Must have a Plumbing Inspector license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners or must be able to obtain within one year.
