About The Position

Planning & Development Services is seeking a Building Inspector to join their team in a dynamic and fast-growing area. This role involves performing building inspections and permitting services for unincorporated areas of Wake County, the Wake County Public School System, and the Towns of Knightdale, Rolesville, Wendell, and Zebulon. The position offers opportunities to join as a General Building Inspector or a Senior Building Inspector, with tiered pay based on experience and certifications. Inspectors will spend most of their time in the field with limited supervision, assisting customers by reviewing construction plans for compliance with North Carolina Technical Codes and Wake County ordinances, answering code-related questions, troubleshooting site development issues, collaborating in pre-submittal meetings, communicating with architects and engineers, and working with homeowners. Inspectors are based out of one of three Regional Centers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience in the construction industry
  • Standard Level II Code Official Certification required in Building trades within 4 years of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted
  • Must hold a Standard Level III Building Inspections certificate (for Senior Building Inspector)
  • Five years of experience in the construction industry (for Senior Building Inspector)

Nice To Haves

  • Inspector prequalification from the North Carolina Department of Insurance
  • Strong customer service skills and principles
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
  • If you hold a 4-year degree in an architectural, engineering or construction-related field you can qualify for a probationary level II certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Assist customers by reviewing construction plans to verify compliance with the North Carolina Technical Codes and Wake County ordinances
  • Answer questions related to building codes, and Wake County procedures, policies, and development ordinances
  • Troubleshoot site development issues and collaborate in pre-submittal meetings
  • Regular communication with architects, engineers, and designers to eliminate possible code violations
  • Work directly with homeowners to help them understand the various requirements
  • Perform building inspections and permitting services
