About The Position

Responsible for performing a variety of tasks associated with advanced technical building inspection and construction plan examination work to ensure compliance with City of Denton municipal codes and adopted standards. This role involves performing daily inspections for compliance, inspecting all facets of construction in various structures, retrieving and maintaining records, reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications, assisting citizens and professionals, investigating public complaints, and providing services during emergency conditions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years’ experience in building inspection or related field
  • Must have a valid Plumbing Inspector’s license issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners within 18 months of employment
  • Must have six (6) valid International Code Council (ICC) certifications
  • Must successfully pass Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses 100, 200, and 700 within 18 months of employment
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, including the ability to review and recommend project improvements based on scope and budget.
  • Skill in analyzing, researching, interpreting, and understanding policies, laws, and regulations and to provide workable recommendations and solutions that maintain compliance and support organizational goals.
  • Skill in moderate problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop, evaluating options, and implementing solutions.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Skill in building inspection techniques.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and other related construction documents.
  • Skill in reading and comprehending highly technical or specialized materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and concisely, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

  • Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification check.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily inspections for compliance with City of Denton municipal code and adopted model construction standards.
  • Inspect all facets of construction in new or existing, renovated or altered, commercial, industrial, and residential structures regardless of size, including, but not limited to: Certificate of Occupancy inspections, change of use, and citizen or tenant complaints.
  • Retrieve and maintain records in written and digital formats; document activities and submit daily inspection reports including electronic formats.
  • Read, interpret, and explain adopted building codes and City ordinances; read and interpret construction drawings and specifications for compliance with adopted standards and in certain situations state and federal regulations/rules as applicable for residential and commercial construction projects.
  • Assist citizens and professionals with questions regarding construction regulations.
  • Assist in the training of Building Inspector I.
  • Investigate and resolve public complaints; determine compliance with City codes and ordinances; report and recommend appropriate actions to the Building Official.
  • Provide services to the general public when emergency conditions warrant it, either in preparation for, or as a reaction to, one or more disastrous events such as: civil disturbance, severe wind event, hail, tornado, flood, ice storm, fire, or other disasters which threaten the safety of citizens.
