About The Position

As a Buildings/Grounds Maintenance Worker for the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs, you will perform a wide variety of semi-skilled work below journey level. This role assists in maintaining the operation of heating and air conditioning systems, water softener, water heaters, laundry and kitchen equipment, plumbing, pumps, and cleans sewer pipes. You will also repair damage to ceilings, dry wall, floor tile, doors, windows, and roofing. Responsibilities include routine painting, moving furniture, replacing plumbing fixtures, light bulbs, electrical switches, and wall outlets. You will install conduit, electrical boxes, and wiring, and replace motors, belts, pumps, shaft seals, valves, fans, and filters. Additionally, you will pick up debris and litter from the grounds and parking areas, mow grass, and rake the grounds. This role involves relocating items for residents when they are transferred to another room, lifting and moving resident's personal items, and operating motor vehicles to provide transportation for residents to off-site medical providers and hospitals as requested. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school plus one (1) year of maintenance work experience preferably associated with the building and mechanical trades and/or heavy equipment operation.
  • Requires the ability to pass a background check.
  • Requires the ability to pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical.
  • Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  • Requires the ability to stand for the duration of the shift, aside from official breaks and lunch period.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
  • This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of working knowledge of construction and maintenance tools, equipment, and materials.
  • One (1) year of elementary knowledge of one or more of the building and mechanical trades.
  • One (1) year of experience in professional groundskeeping.
  • One (1) year of experience in following written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled work below the journey level as directed by management to assist with maintaining the structure, grounds, and equipment required to operate a skilled and intermediate care nursing home as required by the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Performs routine safety inspection and services the equipment and items used by the residents and employees in other departments such as electric lifts for residents and their wheelchairs.
  • Conducts fire and safety drills for the facility.
  • Operates motor vehicles to provide the transportation of residents to off-site medical providers and hospitals as requested.
  • Performs other tasks and duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
