About The Position

The Building Envelope Design Engineer / Design Technologist will work as an active team member within project teams, from assessment, conceptual, and preliminary stages of the project design through to its completion. The successful candidate is a self-motivated, fast learner with a desire to continually learn and grow and has a passion for Building Science. A commitment to providing exceptional client service and developing technical expertise to deliver practical, creative solutions is key.

Requirements

Degree in Civil Engineering – Preference will be given for those candidates with completed courses in Building Science.
Registered as an Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T) with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia, or eligible for registration.
Minimum of 2 years of previous experience in building science or engineering.
Strong, effective and clear communication skills – both written and verbal.

Effective and proven leadership skills.
Fast learner with a desire to grow professionally and personally.

Nice To Haves

Preference may be given to those registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Applied Science Technologist (AScT) or with eligibility and intent to register.
Experience in a consulting firm environment considered an asset.
Experience in the construction industry considered an asset.

Responsibilities

Working with the Client (Architect / Developer) on new builds from schematic design phase through to construction and project close-out stages
Preparation of Schematic Design and Design Development reports
Review of drawings and specifications specific to building envelope design
Completing Thermal Bridging calculations and assisting with thermal bridge free design & analysis
Liaising with the Building Energy Modelling team for enclosure implications
Awareness of the design and material influence on constructability and project costs
Completing construction field review while the project is in the construction phase
Conducting and coordinating commissioning activities including but not limited to mid-construction air leakage diagnostic testing, whole building airtightness testing and window water penetration testing
Over time, attain the strength and confidence to become a project lead – spearheading enclosure designs with the Project Design team
Working with a Project Engineer within the project team to take a project from the Design Development stage through to construction and project close-out stages
Preliminary site investigations and detailed evaluations of existing buildings
Preparation of evaluation reports, studies, and project budgets
Development of drawings and specifications for rehabilitation projects
Design and analysis to determine effective repair alternatives
Awareness of the designer’s influence on constructability and project costs
Review and analyze of bids submitted by restoration contractors
Contract administration and construction field review while the project is in the construction phase
Prime consulting including coordination with other engineering and architectural disciplines
Develop an understanding of the responsibilities and prevue of each respective design discipline and construction trade
Involvement in negotiations and dispute resolution
Over time, attain the strength and confidence to become a project lead – spearheading designs, chairing meetings, acting as client liaison, working with contractors to analyze solutions to unforeseen conditions during the construction phase
