About The Position

As a Building Engineer, you will be responsible for managing building automation systems including performing preventive and corrective maintenance across all building systems, with an emphasis on mechanical equipment and facility infrastructure such as HVAC and commercial refrigeration equipment. The candidate will also be responsible for contract procurement support and vendor oversight. This role entails interaction across departments within the organization. Our Building Operations team is responsible for planning, communication, execution, and continuous improvement of our headquarters located in Lake Forest, IL. This department is a primary responder to building emergencies, including but not limited to power outages, significant plumbing leaks, fire alarms, and security breaches. The Building Engineer’s core hours will be 8AM – 4PM, Monday through Friday, that may fluctuate depending on the time of year and football season. The role requires flexibility to work alternate hours as needed, including weekends and holidays. Rotational weekend shifts are required during the season. This is an hourly paid position.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have previous building engineering and/or maintenance experience in a commercial, industrial, or institutional environment.
  • High School diploma/GED required plus 10+ years of work experience or associate degree, Technical Certification or higher. A minimum of 8 years of experience in facility maintenance is required.
  • Strong knowledge and technical expertise in troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of equipment covering kitchen cooking and refrigeration, pumping and filtration systems and general mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in minor electrical work, including troubleshooting circuits, replacing outlets, switches, and light fixtures, and performing minor electrical installations in accordance with safety standards and codes.
  • Strong plumbing skills, including the ability to diagnose and repair leaks, clear clogs, and replace fixtures.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, such as preventative maintenance and repairs, while also effectively collaborating with other technicians and staff on larger projects and shared responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of general carpentry, masonry, and other building trades.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams).
  • Must be organized, able to manage multiple projects, and excel in an ever-changing work environment.
  • Proficiency in reading building plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to safely operate and possess or obtain an operator’s license to operate a forklift, scissor lift & boom lift.
  • Must be able to work non-traditional hours, in non-traditional settings, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. After-hours support will require the ability to respond to issues within 60 minutes.

Nice To Haves

  • A Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO) License is preferred, or the ability to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve Building Automation System (BAS) issues, including alarms, communication errors, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Contact and work with specialized vendors until issues are resolved.
  • Execute routine preventive maintenance and troubleshoot, diagnose, and facilitate repairs on all building systems and equipment: HVAC, Kitchen Equipment, Plumbing, Electrical, Hydrotherapy Pools, Fire Suppression.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment history. Utilize a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Inspect entire facility daily for any faults (including cosmetic), take initiative to repair, replace or recommend course of action.
  • Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to carpentry, doors, hardware, painting, drywall and repair.
  • Help develop the annual repair and maintenance budget, including capital improvement programs. You'll also track expenses, provide monthly reconciliations, and update management on budget status.
  • Support the creation of a ten-year plan for facility equipment, ensuring foresight into operational needs.
  • Assist in the development and ongoing maintenance of the facility's Emergency Action Plan, playing a key role in safety readiness.
  • Coordinate ongoing vendor relationships, managing everything from scheduling services to evaluating performance and driving continuous improvement.
  • Oversee capital projects from start to finish, including direct supervision of subcontractors during execution to ensure quality and adherence to timelines.
  • Prepare and submit legal requests, then finalize and execute vendor contracts for general repair and service agreements.
  • Assist with future “Greening” efforts by the organization.
  • Remain current on best practices and procedures in building maintenance and improvements.
  • Set up orders with supply houses and order building maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Assist with inventory management of all equipment on property.
  • Support document and data retention for service and construction contracts, building drawings, insurance certificates, warranties, and instruction manuals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
