About The Position

The Building Enclosure Consultant is primarily responsible for managing projects and providing building science recommendations and consultative engineering services to clients for both new construction and rehabilitation projects. Additionally, the Consultant will conduct building enclosure peer reviews, condition assessment field surveys, evaluate and interpret design and field reviews and reporting, and research services, and make recommendations to senior technical staff and project managers. The position involves a mix of site field review and office work related to building documentation. This role can lead to Professional Engineering licensure and a Project Manager position as experience and responsibilities grow.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering, building or architectural science, or mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university
  • 3+ years previous related professional experience is required
  • Ability to draft engineering plans, compile engineering specifications, and inspect construction
  • Ability to formulate and solve problems on projects using past experience and building science principals
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Good ability to communicate with clients, trades, employees, project managers, and management
  • Good ability to shift focus between changing priorities

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to become licensed as Professional Engineer (P.E. license) or Architect within 2 years is desired but not required.
  • Trained in use of building science or energy modeling software or a Master’s Degree in a related field is an added plus
  • Skilled in use of building science modeling software, such as WUFI, THERM, HEAT3 or energy modeling software is an added plus
  • Experience with water testing in accordance with ASTM and AAMA standards
  • Member of and active in a professional practice organization
  • Published article(s) in technical journals or in conference proceedings
  • Active in community service or engineering educational outreach programs
  • Active in local networking or marketing efforts

Responsibilities

  • Participate in design meetings with clients, architects, contractors, and consultants, providing building enclosure design reviews and recommendations.
  • Review drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and construction documents to evaluate design intent, identify building enclosure risks, and ensure compliance with building science principles.
  • Assess alternative materials and contractor submittals, researching products and providing technical recommendations.
  • Conduct site visits to inspect construction progress, review mock-ups, document deficiencies, and prepare technical site reports with recommendations.
  • Perform building investigations, including visual inspections, exploratory openings, moisture assessments, and water testing in accordance with ASTM and AAMA standards.
  • Inspect building exteriors and interiors using appropriate access equipment, including ladders, swing stages, and boatswain's chairs following required training.
  • Prepare tender packages, including construction details and specifications addressing enclosure performance, material transitions, sequencing, installation, and quality assurance.
  • Develop and deploy monitoring systems for environmental and building performance data, analyze results, and conduct testing to evaluate building performance.
  • Prepare technical reports documenting existing conditions, findings, risk assessments, and recommended remedial actions.
  • Support litigation projects by documenting site conditions, collecting and preserving evidence, conducting field testing, and investigating water intrusion and building enclosure failures.
