About The Position

The Building Custodian is a vital role responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning school environment that supports student learning and staff effectiveness. This role ensures that all areas of the building are properly cleaned, maintained, and ready for daily use, while also supporting food service operations as needed. Reporting to the Dean of Operations or designated school leader, this individual must be reliable, detail-oriented, and proactive in identifying and addressing facility needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, and coworkers.
  • Knowledge of sanitation practices or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and perform duties requiring standing, bending, reaching, and walking for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous custodial experience is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, and common areas, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and trash removal
  • Ensure restrooms are cleaned, sanitized, and stocked with necessary supplies throughout the day
  • Conduct regular inspections of the building to identify cleaning, maintenance, or safety concerns
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks (e.g., changing light bulbs, basic fixes) as appropriate
  • Set up and break down spaces for school events, meetings, and activities
  • Maintain floors through routine care such as buffing, stripping, and waxing as needed
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, notifying leadership when restocking is needed
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards
  • Support seasonal or deep cleaning projects during school breaks
  • Assist with setup and cleanup of meal service areas, ensuring spaces are clean and ready for student use
  • Serve student meals to ensure all students receive a warm, delicious, and nutritious meal during the school day
  • Support the disposal of food waste and maintain cleanliness in cafeteria and kitchen-adjacent areas
  • Ensure food service areas meet sanitation and safety standards
  • Coordinate with food service staff or vendors to address cleanliness and operational needs
  • Assist with delivery, storage, or organization of food service supplies as needed
