About The Position

This is an external job posting intended for non-city employees. The starting salary range for this position depends on qualifications. Building Construction Inspector I - $36.30-$41.75 Building Construction Inspector II - $3812-$43.83 Building Construction Inspector III - $40.02-$46.03 Building Construction Inspector IV - $42.03-$48.33 This is technical work conducting building inspections to ensure compliance with existing codes, ordinance and statues. It facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is Essential and is required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in construction, design, or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor, and must possess a minimum of ONE valid building inspector certification or the ability to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Six (6) years’ experience in construction, design, or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of TWO (2) valid building inspector certifications.
  • Seven (7) years’ experience in construction, design, or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor, and must possess minimum of THREE (3) valid building inspector certifications.
  • Eight (8) years’ experience in construction, design, or inspections of buildings as a supervisor or contractor, and must possess a minimum of FOUR (4) valid building inspector certifications or the One and Two Dwelling Inspector Certification.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and maintenance of a clean driving record are required.
  • Possession and maintenance of the State of Florida-mandated licensing requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of building construction.
  • Knowledge of building codes.
  • Skill in using standard equipment and testing devices.
  • Skill in correcting correct defects in building constructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to interpret technical designs and blueprints.
  • Ability to enforce building codes.
  • Ability to focus on the positive in every situation.
  • Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization.
  • Ability to stay centered when challenged.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Conducts site visits to make building inspections.
  • Confers with contractors to explain corrective action necessary for voluntary compliance.
  • Records and documents all building inspections.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public, contractors or other employees.
  • Keeps supervisors apprised of all building inspection activities.
  • Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from a computer.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
