About The Position

The Building-Based Substitute Teacher's role is to maintain classroom discipline and carry on classroom procedures as if they were the regular teacher. This includes maintaining the same responsibilities and duties as the regular teacher, such as bus duty and playground supervision. In the absence of the teacher, the substitute will provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth, while following any lesson plans and/or instructions left by the classroom teacher. The goal is to enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team to support students across the curriculum.
  • Ability to accept and implement directions.
  • Must be able to relate well to teachers, students, other staff members and parents.
  • Must be a person of professional competence and personal integrity.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a school or community setting working with children, preferred.
  • Second Language fluency or competency, preferred.
  • Experience working in an urban setting, preferred.
  • Experience working with Google products and implementing remote lessons as needed, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assigned to rotate into various teaching positions in the school on a daily basis and possibly throughout the day.
  • Implement teacher lesson plans and administrator directives with fidelity and efficiency.
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and, if necessary, the principal regarding expectations for student work, behavior, and lesson execution.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.
  • Ensure the teacher’s absence does not cause an interruption in classroom instruction.
  • Gain familiarity with district curriculum and resources.
  • Attend and contribute in staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Perform supervisory duties as assigned (such as lunch, bus, or recess duty).
  • Assist in the development of curricular materials as assigned.
  • Abide by state statutes, school committee policies and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and perform duties as assigned by the principal or their designee.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Report all suspicions of abuse and/or neglect to DCYF and the principal.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and staff personnel information.
  • Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the Department.
  • Ability to be flexible with job assignments as needed.
  • Remain current on instructional practices in education (e.g., instructional technology).
  • Assume responsibility for other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned.
