About The Position

Under the direction of the Infrastructure Supervisor, the Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker will perform technical duties related to the general upkeep of buildings, grounds, trails, roads and parking lots for Gault operations. Under the supervision of the Infrastructure Supervisor, the incumbent will also perform minor repairs (electricity, plumbing, ventilation, pumps and other controls) and conduct general maintenance on equipment and buildings across the Nature Reserve. Regular work week is Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. Availability of working evenings and weekends when required. Building and land management at Gault includes 21 buildings and structures (including a conference center, a research center 3 laboratories, 2 dormitories, a cafeteria, 2 residences, workshop garages, and other secondary buildings) over 5000 square meters spread over a service area of 50 hectares.

Requirements

  • DEP in Building Maintenance or similar field.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Bilingual; excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both English and French.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong technical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot basic electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and pump control panel issues.
  • Extensive knowledge of various welding techniques.
  • Ability to safely operate and demonstrate best practices in the use of motorized and non‑motorized tools and equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work independently as well as interact effectively with staff and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, safety awareness, and adherence to established safety procedures.
  • Proactive, solution‑oriented mindset with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and operational needs.
  • Comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to approximately 20–25 kg, with or without assistance.
  • Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #2 (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.

Responsibilities

  • Perform installations, renovations, and cleaning.
  • Perform tasks related to painting, carpentry, and similar duties.
  • Inform supervisor of requirements for major repairs at a specialized shop.
  • Ensure the proper use of equipment and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Ensure proper storage, handling and disposal of materials and equipment.
  • Transport equipment, furniture, materials, machinery, and supplies.
  • Operate motorized vehicles such as tractor, truck, all-terrain vehicles, golf carts as well as motorized and non-motorized tools.
  • Provide snow clearing on the roads, paths, and parking area.
  • Ensure all entrances are cleared and secured.
  • Maintain and restore roads and forest trails.
  • Maintain inventory; recommend and purchase equipment and material.
