Build Reliability Engineering Intern - Spring/Summer 2027
About The Position
Hermeus is a venture-backed defense aviation company focused on rapid iterative prototyping to build the fastest aircraft in the world. They prioritize hardware iteration to deliver high-speed systems for the modern battlefield and provide critical capabilities to the U.S. and its allies. As a Build Reliability Engineering Intern, you will support the development, improvement, and standardization of manufacturing processes for next-generation aircraft. You will collaborate with engineers and technicians to address manufacturing challenges, conduct root cause investigations, and implement improvements in structural fabrication and assembly. The internship is available for approximately 16 weeks in Spring (January - April) or 12 weeks in Summer (May - August).
Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related technical field (undergraduate student in your third or fourth year of study, or enrolled in a Master's or Ph.D. program).
- Hands-on experience building, fabricating, assembling, or testing hardware through internships, coursework, clubs, competition teams, or personal projects.
- Comfortable working directly on the factory floor and learning manufacturing processes hands-on.
- Strong interest in manufacturing, welding, materials, structures, or process improvement.
- Ability to approach problems using engineering first principles and root-cause analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to clearly document technical processes.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with engineers, technicians, and cross-functional teams.
- Enthusiasm for aviation and Hermeus’s mission.
- GPA of 3.0 or above.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and improvement of manufacturing processes for aircraft structures and hardware.
- Work hands-on with sheet metal, welded assemblies, tooling, and other manufacturing equipment on the factory floor.
- Investigate manufacturing defects, nonconformances, and process inefficiencies to identify root causes.
- Develop and implement corrective actions to improve quality, repeatability, and manufacturing efficiency.
- Help establish standardized processes and best practices for welding, fabrication, repair, preparation, and assembly.
- Create and improve work instructions, process documentation, and manufacturing standards.
- Partner with engineers and technicians to capture lessons learned and incorporate them into future builds.
- Support continuous improvement projects across structural manufacturing and aircraft assembly.
